This afternoon I was approached by a security officer at the Lighthouse Outlet Mall in Michigan City, Indiana. The observant officer politely inquired about my personal handgun I had on my person and requested to know if I was a police officer. I politely explained to him that I am a Corrections Officer and for which agency I was with as well as providing him with my personal documentation allowing me to carry my personal handgun while out off duty and out of uniform. The security officer insisted that I disarm myself. I requested to see where the no weapon policy was posted. He admitted to me that it was not posted anywhere but that he had a folded card called the “code of conduct” on his person. Although he was not rude to me, he failed to understand that just like police officers, Corrections Officers deal with the same people if not more so than policemen do. Once a police officer takes an individual into custody that individual doesn’t just disappear, they are in the custody of Corrections who must deal with them and the things they do. Due to not disarming myself I had no choice but to leave the premise.
I’d like to respectfully recommend that security services as well as Mall staff have a greater understanding of how broad the law enforcement community is and why we carry our sidearms with us. Myself as well as many other Corrections Officers and police officers get approached in public by individuals who have previously been in the system and remember us. I sincerely hope this is taken into...
Read moreTypically we hit this place for back to school....well Covid19 has wrecked every norm that we've all had before. Bathrooms are closed at the visitors center...we had to walk to another corner of the mall. That bathroom stunk worse than a barn. It was really bad. Only 1 faucet worked too. There was 4 grown men and 3 kids waiting patiently to use 1 faucet. Saw 2 guys walk out without using it. So much mask mandate now....
A lot of the stores have other policies in place (their right) than most retailers. Puma was allowing 15 people at a time (dies that include the 4 workers working too?)...adidas was normal free for all. Nike & under armour had long lines. Zumiez I think was 10 but from my understanding was because he was alone working on a Saturday. And finish line was just closed. Its kinda hard to shop with your family with these rules. We chose to leave and shop online.
Retailers that are doing these different exaggerated rules are hurting themselves. Some of them will join the other empty storefronts that are throughout this mall (and all other malls). You've gotta open up. If you're wearing a mask and I'm wearing a mask as mandated then what is the issue? The next step will be every store doing temp checks before entering. The madness has got...
Read moreI was recently traveling from WI to MI on a regular basis to visit my husband who was there working on a long-term project. So I often would find places to visit along the way to make the drives more fun! 😇 when I say "places to visit" I mean shopping of course! I like to think of myself as an avid antique and fashion shopper with an added flare for interior design as well however my husband refers to it as somethingelse I won't share😆🤐. So basically I'm always on the look out. Anyway I found this little hidden gem right off the highway when enroute so I thought I give it a chance. Its approximately 5 miles off the highway and fairly easy to find. I did take a wrong turn and it got a bit scary but I was there in no time. Very pleasant shopping experience. The cleanliness of the shops as well as parking lots was very appealing and immediately noticed. In fact that was one of my favorite parts on visiting here. Often times when visiting outlet malls or similar its hard to keep clean with the never ending in and out traffic so it was big for me since I'm sll about clean! It was definitely a win finding this little shopping mall. Great stores and some fabulous staff. I surely bought plenty to bring home...
