Title: Smoke and Mirrors: A Terrible Experience at The Knickerbocker on the Lake in Milwaukee Location is not everything. I recently had the unfortunate experience of staying at The Knickerbocker on the Lake in Milwaukee, and I must say that my overall impression was far from positive. From the very beginning, my booking experience left much to be desired. Despite having a 25% off promotion, I was informed of black-out dates that were conveniently not stated on the booking slip or the website. When I called to inquire, I was given a higher rate over the phone. However, when I decided to book online instead, I found that the rate was actually cheaper. This kind of inconsistency and lack of transparency was a red flag from the start. As I arrived at the hotel, the first issue arose when parking in front of the building was virtually impossible. I was forced to park several blocks away and walk back to the hotel, which was an inconvenience, especially with luggage in tow. Adding insult to injury, I noticed a complete absence of luggage racks upon entering the premises. It seemed like a small detail, but it reflected the lack of attention to guest comfort and convenience. The real nightmare began at the front desk. The agent I encountered was not only rude and dismissive but also seemed visibly annoyed by my presence. I felt unwelcome and inconvenienced, which is the last thing one expects during a honeymoon/vacation. When I asked about parking options, I was informed that it would cost an additional $20 per day. Frankly, the idea of paying that much for a non-secured parking area, exposed to the elements and potentially accessible to anyone, was absurd. The hotel was clearly trying to nickel and dime its guests, and this exorbitant fee was in no way justified by the location. To make matters worse, the room itself was disappointing. It was small and far from clean. I could immediately detect the smell of mold emanating from the air conditioning, which was not only unpleasant but also a health concern. Mirrors and other touch surfaces were visibly dirty, and I even discovered personal items left behind by previous occupants. The lack of attention to cleanliness and maintenance was simply unacceptable. Additionally, the room was not turned down during my stay, despite my request and the hotel's knowledge that I would be working during my time there. The Wi-Fi was also unreliable and insecure in my room, prompting me to request a different wifi login room. The alternative room, on a different floor, had a weak signal, making it difficult for me to stay connected. It was clear that the hotel's claim of providing amenities and services fell flat in reality. Speaking of services, despite the hotel having a restaurant attached, there was no room service available. This was highly inconvenient, especially when considering the prices at the restaurant, which were outrageously inflated. The lack of reasonable pricing and the absence of basic amenities within the hotel only solidified my impression that The Knickerbocker on the Lake is nothing more than a deceptive trap. All in all, my experience at The Knickerbocker on the Lake was a complete disaster. The initial booking issues, rude front desk staff, lack of cleanliness and maintenance in the room, along with the absence of essential amenities and overpriced services, made it clear that this hotel is not worth the hype. I strongly advise anyone considering a stay here to seek out alternative accommodations. My partner and I will certainly never return to this establishment again. Should've read the reviews before booking. Was excited to book with a "boutique hotel," as I've had great experiences with them in the past when traveling. Not here. As other reviewers have pointed out, there is no vestige of service here. Interactions with the front desk feels like arguing with your landlord. I called ahead to request an earlier check-in, as I had an event at 5pm and wanted to check in beforehand. Was told "You're welcome to come an hour early but no promises." Arrive to be told my room won't be ready till the check-in time, so I was lost as to what to do. Wasn't even pointed to their tiny lounge space hidden around the corner, which I found later on in my stay. Despite being located *near* the lake (but certainly not "on" it as the name suggests), the multiple front desk agents have no knowledge or desire to help you sightsee. Are there tours available? No idea. What's a good place to get brunch? Don't know - we have a restaurant though. How about dinner? Also don't know. My room, admittedly, was much nicer than the rooms in some of the other reviews. The bathroom was clean, with a nice shower nozzle. The bed was soft and comfortable. Old building = window AC, but it worked fine. There was a cute den/work area and a mini kitchen. The room is what earns this hotel the "barely passable" 3-star rating. Still there were issues. The door squeaked like claws being dragged across a chalkboard at the barest touch. Oh, and despite being on the 8th floor, my view is just... other buildings. I'm not sure any room should expect a spectacular view, though, since the hotel is half a mile linear distance to the lake, and there are buildings and a forest in between. Yea. Have to admit I had a high expectation and was disappointed. Will try somewhere else next time.

Happiness ends the moment you open the front door. This is not a hotel, but an old, deserted, building with about 180 condo units. Owners of an estimated one-third of the units choose to rent their units, which are throughout the building, mixed in with residential units. Every unit looks different, due to having a different owner, so the photos mean nothing about the unit you will get. There was only one Deluxe Suite Lake View on the rental plan when I stayed there, and it not as shown in photos with a corner view, but was on the east side, set-back between protruding wings. The bedroom had one small dirty window in the corner. The a/c unit was too loud so I turned it off, but all night heard the noise of the a/c unit from a unit next door on the protruding wing. The check-in person did not know about street parking - you need a permit to park more than 2 hours at night, so I now have to pay a parking ticket. When I called to ask for a room change, he told me they were "Sold out," which was misleading - he meant they had only one unit of the class I reserved. I don't like being lied to. I love old hotels, but this is a depressing old residential building. I would not stay here again.

A few hours after checking into our hotel a live cockroach came out of the wall. The front desk was notified and asked for a new room, the staff mentioned they had no available rooms. I asked the staff to remove the cockroach and check for others. After the cockroach was removed I asked again for a new room or refund. Staff again said there were no available rooms, but mentioned they needed to contact their supervisor for a refund as they could not approve. We were told to wait 10 minutes for manager to arrive. After waiting 15 minutes and no contact from the manager we decided to book a new hotel and leave as we felt the room was unsanitary. Upon leaving and telling staff the manager was already there, but refused to address us or apologize just made a quick glance. I was very kind about the whole situation and even willing to switch rooms, but the fact the manager ignored us irked me. I have not received one call from the manager apologizing or updating me on the refund. I was told through Expedia they refused my refund. I feel like finding live cockroaches in the wall of your hotel room would leave any guest uneasy. Please treat your paying guests better.

Have to admit to being pleasantly surprised by the hotel. A few of the reviews on here had mad me wary, but we saw no problems at all. We were only here over a Friday night and didn't check in until around 6pm but had no problem getting a spot in their lot. The staff at check-in were very helpful and you can easily leave your car outside while you take care of it. The hotel itself was elegant and clean and our suite was in superb condition. It felt like an old-school hotel room but with bang-up-to-date and very clean fixtures. King bed was very comfortable and kitchen fully-equipped and immaculate. Bathroom seemed brand new and was also very clean. The room was a little warm but you can always crack a window in these older hotels. The rooms still have physical keys, so be careful with them! We tend to gravitate to the County Clare when we stay downtown, but based on this experience, I would definitely add the Knick to the options.

I have to say this was the best family trip I've ever been on. We all took over the Knickerbocker for a wedding. Larry had us all taken care of. We did not have to wait for our rooms at all. The rooms were so clean and charming! The entire hotel was charming. I finally got to meet Asia who I was talking to on the phone. Her fantastic attitude and kindness was so appreciated. The staff was fast and very friendly. We could not have stumbled upon a better place to stay. Chris at the restaurant managed to handle a last minute reservation for the entire extended family. The menu choices satisfied everyone. They had gluten free, vegetarian and something for the meat eaters as well. Milwaukee was such a fun place to visit and we will be back!
