We're a family of 4 and have just spent the weekend at Andy's Homeplace. As major fans of his work, we enjoyed the stay. There's several interesting photos and other memorabilia type decorations, and it was clean. Not exactly top notch hotel style of clean, but not bad. Location is convenient to most of what the town has to offer, (which is very cool if you haven't been). During the day, there was a steady stream of squad car tours, along with numerous others stopping by to take a photo and check the place out. It does my heart good to know that there's still lots of folks that remember Andy and his work. With that said, there were a few disapointments. The property appears semi-neglected. The landscaping and mowing need attention, and the fence is in need of repair. Inside, the bathroom that others have mentioned is indeed small, and the toilet is oddly positioned due to some seemingly bad decisions in the process of remodeling at some point, but it seemed to be fully functional. The fridge was running but not cold and we had to use a cooler. There's one TV from about 1990 with a non working VCR and some VHS tapes of the Andy Griffith Show. The place has wifi, so a nice big smart TV with easy access to stream the full catalog of Andy's work seems in order, but nothing close to that is provided. We had planned a marathon of the Andy Griffith Show so we went to the nearby Walmart, bought a TV, logged into our own streaming service, and watched all night. Overall it was a good experience, but they need to try a little harder. The staff was friendly, and we told them of these problems so maybe they'll be fixed soon. If you're a true fan, this needs to be on...
Read moreUnless your willing to ignore a lot of things wrong I wouldn't stay here. Me and my mom went to stay here at Andy's homeplace this last weekend and I was very disappointed with how the place was and how we were treated. When we arrived at the house after spending the day at Mt, Airy we noticed hardly any of the lights worked in the whole place and after paying 285 dollars for the night that was very disappointing. There weren't any trash bags as well and whoever cleaned left their supplies everywhere. The house is looking a little run down as well especially the backyard where the fence has fallen over. After 3 people came to look around for a couple of hours they said they are gonna have to go get lamps and I didn't pay to sit in the dark when in my opinion that is a very basic thing that should be provided. (To top it off we couldn't even watch the show in the house which was suggested on the website because there was no way to watch it. No DVD, VHS or even on demand cable episodes) we went to the Hampton that owns and operates the house and I was told I can get a free room at the hotel and I could talk to the manager about a refund later so the next morning the manager said that I'll get a call Monday and a check in the mail for a refund well I called today and I was told I couldn't get one and I am very upset. Unless your willing to overlook some basic things to stay here it's not worth it especially when you people constantly stop to take pictures. I will not be returning and I am so disappointed as a huge fan of the show it's a...
Read moreThe idea of staying in his house was very unique and glad we stayed there. However, the home is in need of a lot of work and would probably require changing the integrity of the home. The back doors (both inside door and screen door) have a huge gap at the top allowing hot air, bugs, etc come in to the enclosed back bedroom. I went to open that door to look out on the deck and the door handle fell off. The deck is in horrible disrepair and a large tree lay across the fence in the backyard, assuming from a recent storm. The bathroom toilet is crammed in a small area next to a sink that makes it hard for an adult to maneuver. Not to mention anyone that may be overweight. In the dining room there were puzzles for entertainment, the puzzle I attempted to put together was in horrible condition, pieces ripped, broken. It should be marked as “for historical purposes, do not assemble.” The wooden chair in the living room close to the TV has rungs missing from the back. When you sit in it, you fall through the back of the chair. Why have furniture that is broken? It’s a cool novelty to say you stayed in Andy’s childhood home but feel it would be better for its preservation to not rent it out and allow people to tour through it. The general public have no access to the house as long as it is...
