The Cherokee County Historical Museum is located in Downtown Murphy in the Carnegie Library Building. Look for the bear. Parking is on the street.
The museum is on two levels and starts up the stairs. There is an elevator available on the first level for those who need it. Admission to the museum is $3.
The second floor has a variety of collections of household items and farm tools donated by the community members. There are some gems mixed into this collection. I wish the museum was more focused on the history of Cherokee County and selected the better items to be showcased. It seemed junky with random donated old items of family members. Read moreI learned so much and was more shocked at how much of US History I didn't know. I urge everyone American and Non-American to stop through and learn the truth about US History.
I never thought I'd be weeping in a Museum but there I was cringing at how much I didn't know and the sufferings of the Natives. What is even more shocking is that by the late 1700's the Native Indians were actually very civilized but portrayed as if they weren't.
And even more shocking is learning the REAL truth about Andrew Jackson. Everyone ought to visit and learn the truth about The Trail of Tears.
TIP - You need to go up the stairs and be buzzed in to enter as only a total of 10 ppl can enter. Also, the sign says last entry is at 4pm but if you don't arrive earlier, they may not let you in. Im glad I persisted and kept returning. There was so much history to learn DOWNSTAIRS!
TIP 2 - Visit the Cherokee Museum in Cherokee NC which has soooo much more history...

We spent the better part of a day exploring their two floors of awesome relics and still didn't see it all. I really enjoyed some of the lore about the fairy tears and the moon eyed people. You should definitely come and bring the family. Even our kids were hooked on the history and art, they especially loved being gifted an arrowhead and quartz crystal each. I can't wait until the next time I am in town so I can...
