The Carl Van Vechten Gallery—named after writer, photographer, and Harlem Renaissance patron, was the ideal size gallery so I would not overwhelm myself with multiple levels and stairways. I love museums and galleries, but I try to look for something more manageable since I am not always able to walk as far or as long as other friends and family members. I want to mention this for any visitors who may bring along an elderly relative or someone with an illness or restrictions to their movements.
While in Nashville with my husband, I knew I would like to tour some of Fisk University's campus and take pictures because I enjoy the rich history of African Americans. I was not anticipating such a powerfully creative display as we toured the exhibit full of collages, paintings, ceramic sculptures, and textile-based work. Stopping here, as well as touring the whole campus, was a highlight of...

I even briefly visited the Carl Van Vechten art gallery while attending Fisk University for my History of Fisk class course. We, on the class trip, walked across campus to the gallery but when we went in we went down the stairs which unveiled a new section of the gallery that had a different variety of options expanding from 1890 to present day!! I love love love the art they...
Read moreFantastic tour by Jordan and Jamal. They are a wealth of information about the exhibits on display here and they really know how to interpret each of these amazing works. I brought my history class from another college and felt so lucky for the students to have a chance to see original Alfred Stieglitz photographs and a variety of unique paintings - they have a Renoir, a Picasso and several from Georgia O'Keefe among...
