Central Park is a very kid-friendly place and that is why it is full with fairy-tale characters. Alice in Wonderland is not the only one, but certainly the most famous of them all! Face it, we all climbed up and down the big statue! The bronze statue of Alice was placed in 1959. She is depicted having a tea party with the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit. The composition of the sculpture is very interesting. Alice sits in the center, the Mad Hatter oversees the preparations on her left, while the White Rabbit checks his pocket watch, probably to see if the guests are running late. It is located just in front of the the Conservatory Water! The sculpture was created by Spanish-born sculpture José de Creeft. He was known as an artisan in depicting female figures out of stone, metal, and wood. De Creeft was also famous as a teacher, leaving a trail in Black Mountain College, the Art Students League of New York, and the New School for Social Research. Today the figure is still well-known and well-beloved by both young and old. Kids love it and are used to climbing (I used to do that, too!), and with the poem Jabberwocky written at its bottom. A curious fact is that Alice’s face is based on one of De...

We always enjoy seeing the Alice in Wonderland Statue at Conservatory Water in Central Park. This is a neat collection of figures from the Alice in Wonderland tale, situated upon and around giant mushrooms.

It is always nice seeing children happily play on and around the bronze statues. There is always a crowd around as well. This makes it a challenge to take unobscured pictures but if you are patient, you can sneak one in every once in a while.

One of the things we liked about seeing the Alice in Wonderland recently was the present of spring blooms behind statues. This made for a nice background and some nice pictures this time of the year (first week of May).

Note: This is one of several child friendly statues you will find in this area of Central Park. The Hans Christian Anderson statue is just on the other side of the Conservatory Water and the Group of Bears can be found just south of the MET, just a few minutes...

How curious and curiouser it was, to stumble upon Alice and her merry companions in the heart of Central Park! There they were: the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, and dear Alice herself all gathered in bronze by the water’s edge as though they’d just stopped for tea and mischief.

It’s a glorious sight, really. The city roars all around, and yet here you find a quiet pocket of whimsy. The statue gleams softly under the trees, a little worn by countless adventures (and climbers, no doubt), but all the more charming for it.

There weren’t many people when I arrived, which made it feel as if I’d followed the White Rabbit myself and landed in a small corner of Wonderland, one that belongs to you, if only for a moment.

If you ever find yourself wandering through Central Park, do pause for tea with Alice. She doesn’t mind...
