Più o meno al centro di Central Park, al lato sud del secondo lago più grande del parco e alla fine della lunga passeggiata fra gli olmi conosciuta come The Mall, si trova una grande piazza con un’arcata meravigliosamente decorata con raffigurazioni che rappresentano la natura nelle sue stagioni e i suoi animali, una terrazza sopraelevata e una grande fontana realizzata nel 1868 e inaugurata nel 1873.



Bethesda Terrace fu pensata proprio dagli architetti Calvert Vaux e Jabob Wrey Mould, creatori di Central Park. Nella loro idea il parco e la natura dovevano essere i protagonisti indiscussi di quest’area verde con pochissime opere architettoniche. Le loro parole sono chiarissime “Nature first, second and third – architecture after a while” ovvero “La natura per prima, seconda e terza – l’architettura dopo un bel po’“. Ecco quindi che la piazza, effettivamente una delle poche aree artificiali e l’unica presente nel progetto originale dei due architetti, assume un significato ancora più importante.

Così come allora, la piazza è diventata uno dei luoghi più visitati e rappresentativi di Central Park.

Dove si trova e come arrivare

Bethesda Terrace si trova su Terrace Drive al centro di Central Park all’altezza della 72esima strada.



Se desideri entrare in Central Park e raggiungere subito Bethesda Terrace, puoi prendere le linee A, B, C della metro e scendere alla fermata 72nd Street. In questo modo entrerai dal lato occidentale del parco e, dopo una passeggiata di circa 10 minuti, ti troverai davanti alla fontana di Bethesda.

Se sei in autobus, puoi scegliere sempre di entrare dal lato ovest e quindi scendere alle fermate delle linee M10 o M72 sulla Central Park West all’altezza della 69th Street. Se preferisci accedere a Central Park dal lato est, prendi la linea M1, M2, M3, M4 o M72 e scendi su Fifth Avenue all’altezza della 72nd Street, cammina per circa 6-7 minuti su Terrace Drive e raggiungerai Bethesda Terrace.

Ingresso e orari di apertura

Bethesda Terrace segue gli stessi orari di Central Park ed è quindi visitabile 365 giorni l’anno dalle 6:00 del mattino all’1:00 di notte.

Essendo uno dei luoghi più visitati di New York, ti suggerisco di andarci presto al mattino o comunque in orari meno affollati per goderti la vista e l’area senza avere troppe persone intorno. La zona è comunque bella e godibile a qualsiasi ora del giorno ed è spesso scelta da artisti di strada che ti accompagneranno musicalmente durante la tua sosta in questa bella piazza ideata a fine Ottocento.



L’accesso è gratuito, come per quasi tutte le attrazioni di Central Park; questo parco è infatti esplorabile liberamente, solo i tour guidati sono a pagamento (e infatti alcuni di essi sono inclusi anche nei cataloghi dei city pass di New York). Nei pressi di Bethesda Terrace ci sono anche i bagni pubblici, aperti generalmente da marzo a novembre.

Perché visitarla e cosa vedere



Identificata da molti come il cuore del parco, la famosa Bethesda Terrace ti accoglierà con un abbraccio al tuo arrivo. Questa grande piazza su due livelli è caratterizzata al centro da una bella fontana in bronzo che rappresenta l’Angelo dell’Acqua ed è conosciuta come Bethesda Fountain. La fontana è opera di un’artista donna (non comune per l’epoca) ed è l’unico elemento commissionato dagli architetti Vaux e Mould: tutte le altre opere d’arte presenti in Central Park, infatti, sono frutto di donazioni.

La sua ideatrice,  Emma Stebbins, creò la statua in bronzo da posizionare sopra la base della fontana circolare, una delle più grandi di New York. La statua rappresenta l’angelo della Bibbia che benedice le acque di Bethesda a Gerusalemme dandogli poteri curativi.
