We love the East River...for all the life of our younger girl and almost all of the life of our older daughter, we've been looking out our 9th story window to witness the flow of the East River as it makes its way out to sea!!! I grew up on Balboa Island, SoCal and to be so wonderfully "held" by the water, on its way to sea is among the most serene and calming experiences one can possibly have. I feel so grateful to have had this as context to my existence--and to be able to offer this...

Can't speak so much as to the river itself but I have ridden the bike path along the river several times. It's often in conflict with pedestrian traffic, especially in lower Manhattan (South Street piers). And there's one really narrow spot. I want to say it's around 23rd Street or so. Really tight. You'll have to walk your bike and have a really difficult time squeezing by oncoming pedestrians...
