The Edgar Allan Poe Cottage was a really nice historic site if you are interested in seeing Poe's living conditions during his later years. Although the house mostly contains period relevant furniture, there was a rocking chair and mirror said to have been original to the house. Edgar Allen Poe, although well-known during his life, definitely experienced a harsher side of reality. This historic house is humble, and shows you how simple and minimal life was for those like Poe. There's something refreshing about seeing his cottage, and his desire to get out into the "country" which, at the time, the Bronx was considered.
Overall, I'm glad I visited. The house is very modest and small, and I spent less than half an hour inside of it so it's a nice activity to do if you have some time to spare. I was able to get tickets via NYC's Culture Pass program, and a docent even led us through the house on a small tour. There is a very small souvenir corner where you can purchase Poe...
Read moreThis stop was on accident, as a huge Edgar Allen Poe fan, I didn’t even realize this beautiful part of history was fairly close. So my husband and I set out to visit, and were immediately greeted by Glen with such an enthusiastic personality that drew my husband and I closer to this place. He started with interesting facts about the cottage, some known and some not known which made the experience even better! Personality I recommend huge fans of Edgar Allen Poe to visit because it’s location is crazy. It’s in the middle of Poe Park, and surrounding it is the hustle and bustle of the Bronx, but once inside this cottage, that all goes away for moments when you truly take the time to appreciate the history of such an American poet. Glen entertained us throughout with great knowledge and I will come visit more often as to their recent renovation of the outside. Can’t wait, thank you again Glen! You’re awesome and deserve all the best for your...
Read moreThe historic cottage is truly one of the Bronx's hidden gems and well worth the journey. There's a magical atmosphere permeating every small living space, offering not just a glimpse into 19th-century modest rustic living, but also evoking a haunting sense of connection to the past of Edgar Allan Poe, one of America's greatest writers. Our experience was deeply enriched by the tour guide, who was outstanding in his depth of knowledge about Poe's life and work. Both my friend and I, typically not easily impressed, found Roger to be one of the most erudite experts on Poe that we have ever encountered. We were truly amazed! One minor downside was the surrounding area, which felt somewhat rough, and the lack of decent dining options nearby. Regardless, the visit was thoroughly worthwhile, and we highly recommend it, especially to aficionados of classic...
