Checked out the Holland Tunnel Ventilation Shaft 2 the other day — and it’s one of those weirdly cool, overlooked pieces of New York infrastructure you don’t normally pay attention to.

Standing right there by the river, it looks like something straight out of a Gotham City scene — this massive brick structure with art deco vibes and a kind of mysterious presence. You can almost feel the history in the air when you realize it’s been quietly doing its job since the 1920s, keeping the tunnel below safe and ventilated while millions of people drive through every year.

The spot itself isn’t exactly a tourist attraction, but it’s one of those places you stumble upon and go, “Damn, that’s actually pretty awesome.” Especially at sunset, when the light hits the brick and the skyline reflects off the Hudson — there’s a strange beauty to it.

If you’re the kind of person who loves hidden parts of the city and old-school urban engineering, this is one of those New York gems worth seeing...

A hidden gem tucked under water; but you won't be sleeping with the fishes in this top of the line tunnel ventilation shaft.

A fascinating and underappreciated part of the Holand Tunnel: the merge lanes! Traffic consolidated from 8 lanes into just 2 in this amazing application of mergeonomics. While the tunnel itself boasts traffic that moves at a respectable pace, the New Jersey side of the tunnel offers merge-related traffic jams promulgated by aggressive drivers merging in and out of still traffic - the epitome of NJ driving. Whereas The New York side of the tunnel offers a proper NYC traffic jam experience with 360° of city sounds such as honking horns, yelling pedestrians, and sirens - lots of sirens.

A must-see for the first...

If your going to charge to use the tunnel at least have attendants at multiple entrances to pay with CASH OR CREDIT! You have multiple people who come from other countries and have no idea these places have tollz until the gps sends you in those directions. Was unsetting experience COMING from canada.

Update;

Not only did you charge send me the bill, Canada did have a postal strike, so this resulted in multiple people getting mail very very late. 2.48 $ USD charge turned into late payment fee charged adding an additional 50$ USD 80 $ CDN Late payment fee which RESULTED being a 86$ TOLL BILL ' CDN

ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING' In this day in age having being...

Stumbled upon this beauty on a west side highway walk. Ended up taking a hinge date there the next week (was a little nervous to go alone - heard shafters are an intense bunch!!) Safe to say there won’t be another date, but this vent shaft has 1 more fan. Should I visit 1 or 4 next ?
