J. Hood Wright Park is a park of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation which is located between Fort Washington and Haven Avenue, and between West 173rd and 176th Streets in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The 6.7 acres (2.7 ha) park includes a playground – which features a model of the nearby George Washington Bridge, which is visible from the park, basketball courts, ballfields, and a recreation center, as well as a dog walk, a cave in the natural rock formations which form the park's western boundary, and an installation of a piece of modern sculpture, "3000 AD Diffussion Piece" by Terry Fugate-Wilcox. The park is named for the man who formerly owned the site, J. Hood Wright (1836-1894), a banker, financier and philanthropist born in Philadelphia, who lived in a mansion on 175th Street and Haven Avenue. Wright anonymously gave money to convert the local subscription library into a free library which became a branch of the New York Public Library. The city acquired the land by eminent domain in 1925, specifically to build a park, which the neighborhood was lacking in. It has been upgraded and renovated, and the cupola of the hexagonal recreation center was restored in 2013. The park is supported by the Friends of J. Hood Wright Park, a neighborhood...

As a prime native of this community I can award this park location with a basic "tier of management" recognition. There is a noticeable clean up that has serviced the overall scope of the park. However this is a very congested and active community that requires more consistency and attentive responsibility in safety measures—particularly with children. The playground is lacking in parental supervision and can be risky having younger children play at their free will and feel threatened by older kids sneaking in a bit too aggressively.

Back to the appearance of the park... Considering what the park authorities are aware of regarding certain habits some of the habitants share, there should be more care in removing certain items (contraband odds and ends) left for children to be exposed to. People need more awareness of how to behave and exposing their habits in recreational areas that are mostly inhabited by children...

This was my childhood park I made many memories here. As a little girl I remember going to the park and they had sprinklers spend many hours there. Then as a teenager I remember going to the park to think and hangout with my friends. As an adult I took my my own children and grandchildren too visit where I was raised. I’ve been back many times since I left and it hasn’t changed at all ❤️ My most recent was for all the hype about the movie The Heights which was filmed in my childhood neighborhood 174th Audubon st. Watching the movie brought back so many memories😌 Jew park that’s what we called it. High bridge pool and the neighborhood corner bodega. NYC made who I am today 💯I miss living in NYC 🗽
