Great little site to visit and everything looks like it must have way back when - except for the high-rises where the ballpark should be of course! The picnic tables and food truck at the bottom of the stairway make for a nice little hangout, and there's plenty of shade - bring a camera because there are plenty of picture/selfie angles, and you can even see (new) Yankee Stadium from the bottom.
If you plan to visit, just go straight for the parking garage at 155th and Edgecombe (on the right side if you are coming downhill) - learned that lesson the hard way after circling for at least half an hour looking for a street spot, and it's only $8 for an hour, which for a reasonably fit person is enough time to walk the 2 blocks or so up the hill (past Coogan's Bluff playground, between 157/158th), go down the stairs, and then maybe even wander down the old stairs along 155th to the Polo Grounds Apts themselves. Read moreI gave it 5 stars not for the historical value but because it is a VERY needed staircase!!! It's a good staircase as staircases go. For decade's people coming from the Polo Grounds instead of walking 4-5 blocks out of the way choose to manuever the broken and missing stair steps, traverse a narrow rocky ledge and climb over a railing to gain access to busses and the subway!! So yes! This staircase gets 5 stars. Oh and at the bottom of the staircase on Harlem River Drive is also a nice seating area. Be warned!! The mosquitos will tear you up...
Read moreInteresting piece of history but would have liked more information. Take the C train to 155th and it's just down the block. Take the D train and you have to climb a very long set of stairs (not the Brush Stairway) that goes straight up to get to the Brush Stairway. Neighborhood is a little sketchy, when my friend and I went there, he's black, I'm white; the gang (Bloods, I think) that apparently runs the Polo Grounds Houses had an eye on the two of us the whole time we were walking around. We did not run into any problems and in daylight hours I don't think anyone else would have a problem. Once you finish seeing what you want to see, leave the neighborhood if you are from...
