Howard Brubaker (Jack Lemon) from 'The April Fools' (1969) movie brought me here. Actually I flew on Google Earth 🌎 from San Diego to 140 Broadway NY. I was pleasantly surprised to find the building and it's red cube plus the beautiful 1930s building to it's right all still standing and looking the same and beautiful as in the classic 1969 movie. Sadly here in San Diego, and LA as well, are full of transplant (non-locals) folk who've converged upon our city's governments and have zero respect for architecture of past thus demolishing so many historic landmark buildings to errect 100s of cheap looking eyesores like cheaply built condos and whatnot, half of which are to try housing the chronic homelessness problem which has become a virus of it's own right here. That's what I love and about NYC is how it's people's respect all their old history and building...

Title: A Square Deal at 140 Broadway: Noguchi's Red Cube Shines!

Review:

Stepping into the Financial District, you can't help but be drawn to Isamu Noguchi's Red Cube at 140 Broadway—a vibrant burst of color amidst the monochrome skyscrapers. This iconic sculpture, artfully distorted and perched on one corner, offers more than just a photo op; it's a dynamic conversation starter about art in public spaces. The bright red color and intriguing design create a compelling contrast against the backdrop of glass and steel, making it a must-visit for anyone strolling through Manhattan. Whether you're a longtime New Yorker or a first-time visitor, the Red Cube stands out as a landmark...

This huge (25 foot tall?) outdoor sculpture of steel and aluminum, perched on one end, survived both 9/11 and Occupy Wall Street (That’s a small joke, as OWS, which occurred across the street, at Zuccotti Park, was totally non-violent). Red Cube has been there for fifty years, I think. Just wonderful and is a delight to see, every time. Controversial new redesign of the plaza is afoot so you might want to see it now, before the original architectural concept is corrupted by the addition of trees, walls, seating. Red Cube will...

Beautiful sculpture by Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) right in front of 140 Broadway, one of the architectural masterworks by Gordon Bunshaft (1909-1990) of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Perfect contrast between the geometric red sculpture and the taut black facade of 140 Broadway. The sculpture was installed in 1968, while the building was completed in 1967.

Well if you use this bright metal thing the same way you use a red pin on google maps, ie to indicate a place, hence to get together with a bunch of people: good. Other than that: another piece of so called contemporary “art” where an “expert” needs to explain to us regular folks why this is “art”. Anyway.

As works of art goes this one really stands out as you leave the 9/11 memorial area and head towards Wall St. A Noguchi piece that has been in the same place on Broadway for 50 years , very distinctive against the black finish of the Brown Bros building behind it. very much a perfect tourist photo op.
