It indeed was and is NYC’s original High Line—with better views.
Once reopened, residents began congregating on either side of the bridge in the Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights and Highbridge in The Bronx.
The bridge reopened after being closed and left to decay for 45 years.
Bee Bee Jay, a resident of Highbridge for over 30 years said, “I couldn’t be happier, this is something I’ve been waiting for so long.”
It was the sentiment echoed by many residents.

The opening of this landmark, the oldest standing bridge in New York City, older than the Brooklyn Bridge, the bridge that brought life into Manhattan and helped New York City with its explosive growth that eventually led to The Bronx being absorbed into its fold along with the other boroughs, is really a historic moment for all.

Read moreI love this bridge. It's one of the most underrated bridges, and is also the oldest bridge in NYC. Since this bridge is located in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan, it gets totally overshadowed by the bridges in lower Manhattan/Queens/Brooklyn. It's also the ONLY entirely pedestrian bridge in NYC. The views are great and being right over the Hudson you can get much better views and be able to roam around much better than other bridges.
The only downside is that it does open and close but it's probably for the better since this bridge isn't located in the best area of the Bronx and Upper Manhattan.
Also, if you want more of an exercise, I HIGHLY recommend taking those super steep steps at Highbridge Park on tbr Manhattan side. Your lungs and legs will thank and hate you!
Overall, this bridge is a wonderful bridge, the oldest bridge in NYC, with great history. If you're someone who loves to walk bridges, I highly recommend making the trip up north to the Bronx-Upper Manhattan to cross this bridge. It's...
