Alan's Jewelry & Pawn — Attraction in Painttown Community

I use to work here and I had a great experience as a pawn broker and manager. I loved my customers and the owner and his wife are really nice people. I grew to respect alan for the hard work and dedication he shows that business, you can really tell thats his baby. I can honestly say I NEVER had a bad interaction with alan or Tonia. However, the general manager is a joke. He often said very racist and offensive things about the local clientele, often referring to them as crack heads, treated people like they were trash when the owner wasn't around, and talked about employees behind their backs. He often would forget things and I would volunteer to drive them over to Asheville. I didn't mind this, but what I couldn't stand was how I was treated and talked about by this man. I had many clients tell me they don't want to work with him because he is so condescending. I could say alot more but at this point I would like to think that his attitude and conduct have been noted. But I hear they can't find anyone else. My wife's grandfather was in an accident a bad one and he was not going to make it. I informed management the night before that I had to take her because she cannot drive because of her epilepsy, I was informed I still had to open the store the next morning. Noone showed up to relieve me until 1030. Unfortunately we missed saying goodbye to Mike before he passed and I hold my former manager directly responsible, I informed him the night before we had to leave that the accident had happened. On top of that I had to work 70 hours a week with four people for my staff with no relief. But now the current manager has people coming to work 3 days a week with her to help out. I don't like to make accusations but im a father of three with a wife that was sick at the time and I had not one person come to help me I was forced to work long 13 hour days and was told that is how it is there's no helping it. Then for weeks I was told that help was coming and when it did I received a bandaid solution. Don't let this affect your decision on going to alans again they are great people but rocky and some of the other ones he has there are not pleasant they will either hide from you or be so condescending that you leave from frustration. I received multiple compliments from staff and long time customers that I was the best manager that worked there and I should have the general managers job. Melissa and John were great! Went in the day before my birthday while on vacation looking for a camera since I forgot mine at home. I only planned to buy a cheap decent one for the trip as my lens is broke on my cell from a recent bike trip. A real bummer when you want to take pics of the glorious scenery and animals of the mountains. I saw a camera I have had my eye on for awhile. I had an amount in mind I was willing to pay and decided I would splurge on a birthday present for myself if they would take it. I could not test either camera in store due to dead batteries. Melissa offered to charge both while we went and had dinner at Granny's. She also mentioned she would find out if they would take my "cash out the door" offer but typically the item being there less then a month she was not sure they would. We came back a little later and she had them both charged up. I really was not a fan of the cheaper one and asked again about my offer expecting them to not go for it. She went back to check for me. John came out and offered me a price of $6 and some change more then what I offered originally. Let's just say : "Happy birthday to me!" After that Melissa was very patient with showing us some jewelry from the cabinet we may still come back (and get depending on how much money we spend this vacation LOL). They had some beautiful native pieces and all silver was 30% off. John was a fun friendly guy and showed us some videos he took recently of the locally famous big bull elk that eluded the tribe every year. We also got some great reminders of when and where to go catch them in person. I have a favorite pawn shop back home in FL I deal with a lot, and now I have a new one I will use when back for my yearly vacation in the Smokeys. I am a PROUD visitor of the Cherokee Store. I had called Alan’s Jewelry and Pawn, In emotional distress. John Answered. I could barely talk- Dealing with a Narcissist is Hard to say the least and I was Looking for a Place to Pawn my Wedding Ring. Google Recommended them to me On Tuesday Night because it was the ONLY place that was open. Yes, it was A Far Drive- (Over 2 Hours and 45 minutes) but it was completely Worth every minute and mile driven.

I wanted a place that would understand where I’m coming from and my situation and make it personal… John a Was VERY Emphatic, Understanding, and Made It Personal for me. He heard me Out with My Situation, and Got me the BEST deal out of it! The DEAL I WANTED from it. He was Reasonable, and Listened to what I had to say. He’s Very Organized, and Knowledgeable. It was an Absolute Privilege Working with John and the rest when I got there.

Got me in and Out within 25 minutes! Tested the Jewelry, RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. And They do Go Buy Weight! And Has a GREAT CONVERSATION!! I was Listened to and heard, I even got to Trauma Dump a Little Bit! Haha!

Thanks John! You have Stupendous Experience with Customers, and Empathy. You can tell He Enjoys his Job and the people he talks to. It’s not “Just a Job” with John. Or the Others-It seemed.
