The St. Johns River Center is a joint effort between the City of Palatka, Fla., and Georgia-Pacific's Palatka Pulp and Paper Operations. The center focuses on the wetlands areas associated with the St. Johns River system.
The center serves as an educational resource regarding the ecological significance of wetlands, the conservation and sustainability of these areas and the need for a balanced approach to usage among all communities.
The St. Johns River Center, 102 N. First St. in Palatka, is open from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free, for more information about the St. Johns River Center or other City facilities call 386-916-5916 or 386-329-0100, ext. 410.
I entered building out of curiosity. I had no clue what was inside. It’s located across from River and is a fairly new building with very nice architecture. This is definitely a great place to take kids on field trip or if visiting. They will learn a great deal about wetlands and there are also displays that are interactive. It's also fun for families that are interested in learning about the ecology of the area. Last, but certainly not least, is the Palatka Coffee shop, inside the center. They make the best hot lattes... My husband and I are both addicted to the Toffee sea salt caramel crush. We are generally frugal, and would seldom get anything but regular drip coffee. But one sip of the Toffee Crush latte, and we were hooked. I get a latte every day I work. The Center has lots of plans for improvement and expansion, and should be a fun venue for...
Read moreAs a volunteer, I love it! Love sharing about our town and river and nature. Love, love meeting out of towners and people from abroad. The center is very clean and nicely air conditioned, with clean bathrooms and refreshing water fountain.
