If I could give 0 stars I would. This was an all over awful experience. I'm not sure what the mask mandate is, but the only staff wearing masks were the chefs at the hibachi table. I feel this isn't a good business decision. We had a reservation at 7pm and arrived early, knowing it may take awhile until we received service. We were seated immediately which was nice, but we didn't get drinks until 7:20. We were seated in the back of the restaurant and there was a ladder on top of a table. This could have been easily moved before having customers dine. There were 2 of us and we only received one soup and one salad although each dinner comes with both per person. We couldn't order the miso soup because there was no tofu, so I also didn't receive tofu with the veggie and tofu hibachi. I am vegan and informed our waitress no butter and no egg with my dish. When the chef cooked he laid out the veggies and then cooked the raw chicken and meat right next to it. Some of the raw chicken touched the raw veggies as he was cutting them. This is food safety 101, so I have no idea what happened there. He then forgot about not adding the egg to the rice, even though 5 minutes before he had confirmed with me on this. He then scooped out the egg to set it aside and cooked up the rice. The meat was cooked up in the middle and afterwards the veggies were cooked right on top of where the meat had been. I had to inform the manager of this and they acted as if they cared and said they would have my meal cooked in the kitchen and brought out to me. It was clear they didn't care about my experience from the "meal" they brought me. It was nothing that I would have gotten in my hibachi experience. The plate was barely half way full of a small amount of noodles and veggies. The manager seemed irritated by the entire situation. They did comp one of the hibachi dinners so there's that, however, the meal was still over $50 after tip and this was nowhere near the worth. My husband, not a vegan, said the food was no better than take out from a fast food joint. It didn't help that we had been to a hibachi in St. Augustine the week before that gave us top notch service and the food was amazing. Needless to say, we won't be returning and it is well worth the drive to St. A for a true...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI am not one to complain or write a review about a business but when it comes to the customer service/hostesses they were utterly useless this evening. Walked in as a party of two to sit at a bar side table opposed to the hibachi side. She said there was a wait for both, but a table on the bar side would take 20-30 minutes. Then another employee walked up and said it would be less than that - as soon as a table left we would be next. She asked us to take a seat and she would seat us shortly. After 10 minutes, a table leaves. Then another table 5 minutes later, and then the 3rd table leaves after us waiting about 20 minutes. No one goes to clean off any of the empty tables during this time. During the next 20 minutes, several people come in who were on a waitlist and get seated at the hibachi side. 40 minutes in to us waiting and none of the empty tables had been cleaned off. Two people walk in and ask for a table on the bar side and the hostess cleans off a table and seats them, immediately. When they walked in we stood up and went back to the hostess area because it seemed like they were going to be seated ahead of us. When they were sat, we asked when a table would be ready for us since it had been 45 minutes and 3 tables were cleared. The hostess confusingly asked if we wanted to sit on the bar side or hibachi and then said someone else would come clean a table. I repeated saying we had been waiting for a table on the bar side for almost an hour, the two people who had been seated ahead of us looked up shocked. Another hostess puts two table settings down at the sushi bar and I repeated that we were waiting for a table. The original hostess we had been dealing with starts pushing two tables together and asks the other hostess to help her set it for 5 people. I interrupted and said it was just two of us and the hostess confusingly said āI thought you told me 5 peopleā I responded telling her that the two of us had been waiting for almost an hour sitting right next to the hostess desk, and despite tables being available for over 30 minutes. At this point we finally just left because the process of trying to get seated which should have been very simple became frustrating and quite...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHave you ever been to a hibachi restaurant? In terms of the food preparation experience, Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar is much like every other hibachi restaurant:
Friendly chef rhythmically clacking and clanging, swirling and twirling his cooking tools? Check. Roaring, face-warming flame at the start to get your attention? Check. The flaming onion choo-choo train trick? Check. Chef tossing morsels into customer mouths for laughs? Check. Veggies were sliced and diced, together with a large mound of rice, all fried with lumps of butter and portioned out before the proteins come out? Check.
I'm not saying that any of these things are bad, but you'll see these time-tested themes at the Steakhouse. The thing that sets the Steakhouse apart seems to be the nice seating area near the bar for those foregoing the hibachi experience for sushi and drinks. I'd like to return to eat and explore the drinks menu more in detail in this area one day, actually.
The hibachi-area is large with a dozen grills. The service was quick and we were well-attended to. Servers were very nice and our chef was friendly.
The menu is typical: steak, chicken, scallops, shrimp, etc and combinations thereof. My party of six ordered some of the above proteins (served with ginger sauce and a creamy "yum-yum sauce") as well as edamame and shrimp tempura as starters.
As for the quality of the food, the portions were huge and seasoned well. Maybe too well as chef may have added a squirt too much soy sauce. Soup and salad (lettuce) come with each hibachi meal. Salads are served with a choice of either ginger dressing or a creamy āyum-yumā dressing. We found the ginger dressing stronger than that of other restaurants; my father didnāt eat his ginger-dressed salad. Overall, though, the meal was good.
Restrooms are appointed well and clean.
For a very familiar, but good, hibachi experience, do visit the Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar. Let me know how the sushi...
