I have been to Cathedral Cemetery several times. One of Philadelphia's Oldest Catholic Cemeteries and each time that I have visited the grounds were well kept, grass mowed and such.
Like Mount Moriah Cemetery families have abandoned the cemetery. To look at the old church that is there, and the old school, rectory, and convent it feels like a time in the past, quiet and still.
The cemetery is enormous and could use some community days where people pitch in. Say Fix the Gate and Fence Day or Paint the Gate and Fence Day, etc.
When it comes to grave stones, and fallen grave stones, they are a problem the living do not want to think about at any cemetery. It is not a Cathedral Cemetery only problem.
How many of our own families are willing to chip in as a group to fix grave stones? None. That's not a cemeteries problem when families can't work together...
Read moreDISGRACEFUL. I went to visit the graves of my ancestors who are buried at Old Cathedral. The cemetery was poorly marked and grass was high. A large number of flat markers were either completely covered or in the process of being overgrown by grass. Whole areas were seemingly barren, but you could tell from the uneven terrain that there were numerous graves there despite the lack of headstones. I pulled the grass coverings off a few during my search. I was not able to find my ancestors' graves. I plan to return with tools and look for their graves and uncover them. I expected this sort of situation when I went to pay my respects at Mount Moriah (which had been abandoned), but I'm shocked to find these terrible conditions at a cemetery that is supposedly...
