Heirloom has pretty much anything you need with reasonable prices. However, we have had an overall negative experience utilizing the curbside option during the pandemic. First, they seem to offer an option to substitute, but a lot of times we end up missing important items like chicken breast or milk and they do not substitute. Second, they promote it as curbside but often when you call to have them drop the groceries off, they encourage you to come into the store and you have to ask for them to bring out the groceries which seems to defeat the purpose of curbside - especially for high risk groups of people. Finally, they recently implemented a new text system and it has been by far the worst experience so far. Along with the other minor annoyances like having no chicken breast and wanting you to go in and pick up the groceries, we texted to let them know we had arrived, but still had to call 3 times before someone came out with our groceries. In all, we were sitting in our car for more than 20 minutes even though we arrived within our 1 hour window. And they also advertise it as contactless, but they have someone come up to your window to sign something. This may seem like minor complaints, but for people who need to be extra careful during a pandemic, these add up.
The larger Giant stores have vastly superior curbside options, so if you are an at-risk person who is looking to do curbside to avoid going into stores or coming into contact with people during the pandemic, I highly recommended leaving the city to find a regular supermarket. This Heirloom market does not seem like they are well-equipped or well-trained...
Read moreWhen Heirloom opened it offered a pretty decent selection of foods at a range of different prices. It never had the most expansive selection but it had almost all of the staples with options from cheap to fancy.
In the past 4-6 months, the prices have increased about 40-60 percent on most items. Selection has diminished as well in that many of the cheaper products just are no longer restocked. The cheapest frozen meal for one we could find the other day, for instance, was an $8 frozen rice bowl. Inflation is a problem, yes, but Heirloom's price increases seem much much worse than say, Sprouts or Trader Joes. It is incredibly frustrating how dramatically and mercilessly they have raised prices.
At the same time, there has been a significant worsening in the quality of some items, like the boxed salad. Despite sell-by dates a week out it doesn't last more than a day or two. Disappointing when a 5 oz bag is now $4 or a 16 oz carton is up to $7 or $8.
On the plus side, Heirloom remains a convenient place for to buy a six pack or a bottle of wine and their fruit is pretty consistently good. Fancy cheese and ice cream selection remains strong (though not at all cheap) for a small store.
We used to shop here for almost all of our groceries. We could sacrifice a slightly higher prices and lower selection for the convenience. But now we universally make the effort to go the distance to Sprouts or TJs; Heirloom just isn't...
Read moreHad been a long time shopper but had a terrible experience with store manager today. Our au pair is Spanish speaking and had family visiting from her home country. They were cooking a special dinner for our family and went to Heirloom to buy champagne. They didn't realize that they needed their passports to prove they were 21 to buy champagne. When they couldn't buy the champagne using their drivers licenses, our au pair called me to ask me to come buy the champagne. When I arrived I learned that the store manager had told the au pair (age 24) and her aunt and uncle (in their 50s) that they couldn't even hold the champagne bottle while they waited for me. The manager then refused to sell me the champagne because "ALL members of the party must show ID." She kept pointing to the sign which says nothing about all members of the party showing ID. In fact I have bought wine with my very young children on multiple occasions with no problem (they were not asked to show ID and in fact were clearly underage!) so this newly created rule makes no sense at all. When I challenged her on this and suggested that perhaps the reason for this new rule was that the customers did not speak English, she yelled at me and threw me out of the store. She was truly offensive. I am horrified by the discrimination against our friends. I absolutely will not be shopping at this store again. Completely...
