The Wanakmaker building, named after John Wanamaker, is a historical department store nestled in the center of the city and catacornered to the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly affection's, City Hall. The building boasts beautiful marble floors, rich wood tall ceilings, and a huge iconic brass eagle. The Wanamaker building used to host dining etiquette classes and during the Christmas season, a decorative train would wind its way around the story. In addition to children, men, and women's clothing, shoppers can find, makeup, perfume, cologne, and accessories. During this time of year, customers and onlookers can stop by to witness a Christmas themed light show with elves, reindeer, and angels to dancing to delightful music. And, good little and boys and girls shuffle their way to the third floor, walk through a large room (what I believe used to be the old dining room where the etiquette classes were held), smile for an elf who is solidifies your moment in time with a snapshot for the store and then stand in another line to gain entry to the Charles Dickens Village. There, you'll fund, Ichabob Crane, Marley, village people, and the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. So, if you and the family happen to be in center city, Philadelphia and don't mind spending 20 minutes (or longer, depending on the tume of day) in line, this free exhibit is waiting for you, your friends, and loved ones...
Read moreAn important historic landmark in Center City Philadelphia, the Wanamaker Building was once the home of the sophisticated and highly praised Wanamaker Department Store. It is now, very unfortunately, the home of Macys. How do I even get started about my experience visiting the store on December 27? To begin with, the store does not have a properly stocked men’s underwear department. What they have looks like leftovers from another era. No sales associates to be found, and the few ones available seem to be poorly trained, out of place, uninspired and uninformed. I walked through the store around 3 pm. The place was crowded with shoppers, very busy indeed. For the entire men’s department on the ground floor, there was only one cash register open, and a long line of people waiting to be checked out. I asked one associate standing in the men’s shoes area, who seemed busy scrolling his phone, if the store carried ear muffs. He glanced at me with a smirk and said, “it’s a big store, I wouldn’t know.” And returned to his phone. There were clothes strewn around everywhere as if a tornado had gone through it. The scene was completed by the presence of plenty and menacing security guards with eagle eyes watching your every move. Is it time to bring back style, refinement, and sophistication? I would hope so, but I am not holding my breath. Prove me...
Read moreMacy's, Macy's, Macy's how I put up with your ways. I always love going into the Wannamaker building, though. I've worked holidays at this location and it's a racket with them to try and get shifts. It's like a lottery. It's offensive how they treat their employees. I used to have a Macy's credit card. That's a racket too with the coupons. Macy's is running some kind of racket on the only undergarment that works for me right now. It's the Wacoal Retro Fit, I call it the Christina Hendricks from Mad Men bra. I love it! Last week when I was at Macy's the water fountains were out. There's a scary security guard working as bouncer to the lady's room. No sales clerks on the 3rd floor. This should not encourage anyone to steal from Macy's. The security office has about 150 closed circuit TV monitors off of the cosmetic section. I wouldn't do it. That being said, the bra is $60. It lasts a long time. But, you are supposed to change your bra each day,...
