There are so many things to love about this theater. It's one of those old school "event cinema" venues, ideal for film festivals (like the Philadelphia Film Festival held here). The theater is also home to the Philadelphia Film Society, run by people who love and appreciate all aspects of a good cinema experience. As such, the Film Center has incredible sound design, top-tier projection, and a taught, clean screen.
The staff here is also super friendly and solution's-oriented. There were a few instances in which I faced ticket purchasing issues, and the staff always went above and beyond to address them.
Some downsides: They sometimes don't answer the phone or respond to emails (especially around festival times), the theater doesn't have precise blackout panels to match a film's aspect ratio (so films aren't always masked properly with the manual side curtains), and you won't find comfortable recliners here. But these cons are slight in comparison to the experience you get (right in Center City, to boot).
I wish I lived closer to Philly so I could take fuller advantage of the Film Center's offerings. Regardless, as long as this theater keeps showing film classics on film and digital 4k, I'll remain a...
Read moreUpdating my previous review of The Prince Theater, now renamed The Philadelphia Film Center. Valentines Day weekend was also my birthday weekend. As a gift, my girl took me to the film center's special event of presenting all eight Oscar nominated films for 2018, from Friday evening through Sunday evening for $50 per person. One of only a few venues in the entire country that played all eight Oscar nominated films back to back.
A wonderful time for true movie buffs it was. And finally they have a pure butter dispenser for their bit too salty popcorn. But don't mind me because I am not the world's biggest salt fan. My girl likes the popcorn as it is now with 100% butter topping available.
The venue is always clean, particularly the bathrooms that can be the thing of nightmares at other venues at times. The staff is accommodating and the seats are old school comfortable. Sorry, no lean back seats on tap here. Management should make it a priority attaching cup holders to the seats.
All in all a very nice movie going experience. With other upgrades and one of a kind events in the works for this year, the Film Center is on its way to being the watermark standard for movie theaters...
Read moreOn 03/28/2023 I went to see Night Raiders and listened to Professor Joey Miller (West Chester University/Philosophy) discuss how science and morality within indigenous culture mesh with each other. In this Post apocalyptic film, it blends both old Native American and New Zealand culture to fight against a new regime that has plagued the people of Canada. The movie had great performances by its actors and the atmosphere of the setting was a joy to watch. With there being so much post-apocalyptic content out there I do feel that this movie would have been better suited as a series to explore the different characters backgrounds, and also maybe show how old customs were used to fight against futuristic technology. What I enjoyed most was the topics discussed after the film. Professor Joey Miller had explained how science mostly does not go hand and hand with western morality. I really appreciated the audience output and I even shared some of my own. Had a great night and hope to have more at this theater...
