We stopped by the lighthouse before leaving and we are really glad we did. It is $5 for each adult and we were a group of 7. We payed so we could enter and climb to the top. The worst part? There’s a lot of stairs. This was a little hard for someone in our group who has arthritis but she managed to get to the very top regardless. Now, keep in mind, after you climb the stairs, then you have to climb up a small ladder and then after that, there are a few more stairs. When you pass the ladder part, there is the main opening that takes you outside and you can walk all around in a loop. If you choose to climb up the extra stairs, it takes you up a tad higher and it has a great view that is not open air. That area cuts off, it doesn’t loop around. I really enjoyed it and thought it was fun. We were up there about 10-15 minutes but decided to come down when we saw more people coming. There is definitely not room for many people. Also, someone in our group got anxious because of the height so not recommended for people who have a fear of heights. The best...
Read moreThe lighthouse was very neat to visit and got some great pictures at the top. The cost was ok but honestly could have been a bit less. Granted $4 was not a bunch but with a family of 4 $16 to climb a bunch of steps just to look out to the bay area was a bit much. Oh the lady working the booth for payment should have been a bit more informative to make sure people going up know that the stairs are extremely steep in areas and there were a set of ladder steps at the top in case someone is claustrophobic or scared of heights or is just unable to physically climb that way. Plus It got crowded for a bit and made me nervous for the smaller kids. 2 foor wide steps that were narrow with people going in either direction was a tight squeeze. I had to brace myself on the inside pole to let the people going down have the wider part of the step and rail. And pray i didnt get knocked over. But regardless once at the top it was pretty and the...
Read moreThe Port Isabel Light House & Visitors Center are a great place to start you tour of the town. The views from the top are outstanding and you can see for miles on a clear day, of which we have a lot of here. Like most places in Texas, climbing ten feet can provide some interesting scenery. The grounds are small, but the shops and restaurants surrounding the Light House are unique and charming. A little historic note is that the light house sits on the former site of Ft Polk ( a supply base for Gen Taylor). This site was chosen due to its elevation. Prior to Ft Polk being built just before the Mexican-American War, there was a fairly steep cliff along the waters edge. Today, the fort is gone along with cliffs, so it's difficult to imagine what it once looked like. This is a must stop when visiting South Padre Island and...
