quite expensive, not much stock. very random assortment. shop is very clean and very cute. The owner has accused me of never having been to their store because they don't remember me. Weird. I have shopped this store before, once, back in May. I had my son with me, and I didn't buy anything but my son did. ETA the owner has heavily edited their response. Their original reply was very accusatory and aggressive in tone, hence the following part of my review not quite matching what their response now says.
I mentioned that the prices are expensive, and they are for someone on my kind of budget. I didn't purchase anything because I did not have any money. (speaking of Bread and Roses...) I am on SNAP, and I didn't see any signage that indicates this market takes EBT benefits. I will continue to shop New Seasons and Fred Meyer because they do take EBT. Yes, people on food stamps are part of your target demographic.
I don't know where you get the idea that I am only here making reviews to up my Google Guide score. That is an incredibly inaccurate and frankly acrimonious thing to say. There is no reason to lash out at someone for leaving an honest review. Just because all of the other reviews for your shop are glowing does not mean that you won't ever get less than stellar marks. I have lived in Oregon my whole life so far, and I moved to this neighborhood six years ago. I am familiar with the meaning of Bread and Roses, so when I saw this market going in, I was excited, and in awe of the work being put into it by the owner (who, if you didn't know, basically built the store with their own two hands. Literally.) One of the reasons I moved here was because of the shops and the parks nearby. In those six years I have seen quite a few businesses come and go, and each time a shop or restaurant closes, it's disappointing to see the hard work fail. But I also leave honest reviews. If you think I would leave a less than five star review to deliberately sabotage a new business, you don't...
Read moreWe've chosen this as our regular grocery store. They have great prices, friendly helpful staff, and contain a wonderfully comprehensive array of products for such a small space. All the essentials plus a variety of surprising and interesting delights. We generally find everything we need here (even gifts!), and their fresh produce is reliably good and organic. The staff there are always down to earth, friendly and helpful. We love that this store is on SE Foster, being easily accessible by bicycle to us who live further out East. A note on some past reviews, it seems that some people wrongly think this store is a mere convenience store (which it is not!) and have therefore had their noses rubbed the wrong way by the 5 item minimum. As regular customers, we appreciate the 5 item minimum as a measure that Bread and Roses has put in place during the pandemic. It keeps traffic low by discouraging in-and-out single purchase buyers, and hence keeping the space safer and more efficient for all shoppers during this...
Read moreMy wife has done most of our grocery shopping during the pandemic, so she discovered Bread and Roses long before I did. It appears to be a perfect addition to a neighborhood that is attracting a lot of independent businesses. At first glance, this seems to be a small store, but an L shaped corner at the back extends the space quite a bit. You will not find five different brands of any particular product, but the ones that they have are all high quality. On my first visit, I was happy to see a good selection of Equal Exchange coffees and teas. We came away with a variety of tea and a nice bottle of moderately priced wine. Because we were headed elsewhere before going home, we didn't purchase anything requiring refrigeration, but spotting frozen dumplings from Kachka was all I needed to recognize their commitment to excellent products. Looking forward to...
