For almost three years I have been coming to LA Fitness, paying dues for myself and my wife every month (even though she has only been twice). Even though I come everyday none of the staff knows my name or even gives me a look of recognition. And though their sales and marketing machine often leaves me wondering why I sacrifice community and customer service for such a corporate profit centered entity (believe me I have no problem with making money, just the lack of service this particular company seems to have embraced as they push to increase their bottom line).
But still I come, because it is convenient and I know other customers.
Today I wanted to bring my son, who is visiting from college, to work out with me. I figured a customer service oriented manager would see my need and hoping that my lack of complaints in the past (for broken equipment that takes weeks to fix), my consistent payment and that I come nearly everyday; they would gladly set him up with a free guest pass and we could enjoy a workout together.
No such luck, $15 for a day pass (equivalent to half of what I pay a month). I payed it, begrudgingly, and had to listen to my son tell me I was being a curmudgeon.
The frustrating part for me, is not that I had to pay; but the lack of any recognition of my past loyalty. Anyone can deny my request and blame company policy, but as a customer service and sales professional myself I know there is always room for an exception.
Instead of looking at my account and saying, "we make money every month from this guy and his wife and probably will for a very long time if this goes right". I got a half hearted "sorry, can't do it"
Well, it is all for the good, because the economy has us looking for ways to save and this can just be on less expense for us each month.
I am going to sit in the hot tub one last time, enjoy some time with my son before he leaves for college and then cancel (which I am positive will be a big ordeal as they try and squeeze me for another month or two because I did not cancel properly).
At least I can find solace in the fact that social media provides me an outlet to express my unhappiness. Did I mention their in-house radio station keeps pitching free guest passes for friends...

Dear Sir/Madam!
I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding an incident that occurred at LA Fitness in Portland, Oregon.
On 01/20/2025, my locker at the gym was broken into, even though it was locked with my own padlock. All of my belongings were stolen, including: • Cash • Credit cards • Identification cards (licensees, IDs) • Car keys • My clothes and shoes In addition, my car, which was parked outside the gym, was also stolen.
What further added to my frustration was the lack of support from LA Fitness management in resolving the issue. The only help I received was advice to call the police. Additionally, there was no support or meaningful cooperation.
I was also shocked to discover that there are no security cameras in the gym or parking lot, making it impossible to identify the perpetrators or prevent similar incidents in the future.
I also learned that another person at the gym was also the victim of a theft that same day. This person also had their personal belongings stolen, including credit cards, cash, and other items. This is a systemic issue that raises serious concerns for the safety of LA Fitness customers.
I find this situation completely unacceptable for a facility that advertises itself as a safe fitness environment. The lack of basic safety measures, the staff's indifference to resolving the issue, and the complete lack of accountability fall far below acceptable standards of service.
I respectfully request the following: A written explanation of the gym's security policies and the lack of security cameras. A refund of my membership dues due to the gym's failure to provide a safe environment. Consideration of compensation for stolen property.
I reserve the right to address this issue to law enforcement agencies, consumer protection agencies and legal entities if I do not receive a proper response to this complaint.
Please take this issue seriously and send a response to this complaint. In the future, for people planning to visit this gym, choose a safe place to exercise. Thank you for...
Read moreThis gym is great! It works out well for my work schedule! Huge facility with alot of cardio equipment, a pool, a hottub, sauna(s), a large free-weight area and many workout machines. Other reviewers spend all their time writing about their struggles, instead of taking the time to write a well rounded review for googlers and a customer's perspective so that LA Fitness can grow/change.
The gym is not crowded in the early mornings which is when I work out. This cuts out my waiting time for machines/benches. There is never a wait for treadmills(morning/day/evening). You will occasionally have a newbie taking up a machine for 15-30minutes (meaning they do a set, then sit there pondering life until the decide to do another set). This is something you experience at gyms occasionally. Do one set. Step aside to rest. Give someone else a chance to get a set in too. Especially if you saw someone use it a minute before... they are probably gonna come back to get another set in!
A reminder on the LA fitness screen by the water -fountain could serve as reminders for proper gym etiquette.
The men's locker room will occasionally have used paper-towels on the floor that do not get picked up, rarely these papertowels end up in the corridor in-between the showers. Normally the gym is cleaned early morning and I do not experience this in the showers. I wish customers would take more pride in the gym. If you use a tissue throw it in the trash!
Maybe the gym should charge a littering fee on members whom they see drop trash and don't pick it up. Maybe if those litterers had to pay more they would learn to respect their gym more.
This change would make it easier on the maintenance staff at LA Fitness who work faithfully to help to make our gym the best it can...
