What a great place. This is a working synagogue but also has an art gallery incorporated into the community portion of the temple. The artwork, displayed by several artists, Jewish and otherwise, was beautiful and accessible in price. I bought a small piece and waiting for shipment at the end of the showing. I was greeted by Nancy who is a lively, friendly, spirited factotum of the synagogue who also presented an enthusiastic description of the artwork and artists on display. This was a accompanied by a history of the Jewish community in Portland as well as her own familial experiences. The structure of the building is quite interesting and the small area reserved for a daily quorum as well as the larger more formal weekly gatherings was easily accessible and quite picturesque. Donations are recommended but not mandatory although given the quality of the environment it is not too much to ask for individuals to provide patronage of even a nominal amount. All in all a real hidden gem in the city of Portland.

Wonderful docents and artists, sharing information about the museum, it's history, and about the synagogue and art within. There is also a tribute to many Jewish people held in captivity by Hamas from the October 7, 2023 attack. A wonderful place to visit. I am on a cruise and I was too late to get onto any of the tourist bus trips and it's a good thing that I was! I just walked around and happened upon this museum...a gem that I would have otherwise missed. I recommend very highly.

This place is so incredible, so special. Over 100 year old, still active Synagogue turned into a Jewish Museum. Totally restored. Rabbi Gary Berenson who grew up in the Synagogue is now the rabbi there. It’s worth a visit and worth hearing his story. Loved the Maine Jewish Hall of Fame and the beautiful art exhibits. Attended a Kosher and Israeli wine tasting. Love the events they curate.

Really enjoyed touring the synagogue and its exhibits. There’s a great deal of art for sale inside and you’ll feel welcomed to wander around.

There seemed to be some uncertainty of some rules, such as where we could take photos, and some history. For example, they told us only one Holocaust survivor is alive in Maine and that the survivor I’ve connected with over the years had passed away back in 2017 or 2018. He’s still alive and the exhibit in the museum also reflects that.

The staff are absolutely knowledgeable, these are just two pieces where we received uncertain or misinformation. You will be warmly welcomed...
