Event Planners: This is an excellent spot for an event. I worked with Albert and it was one of the easiest sales processes I've ever experienced. He actually asked questions about the event that showed he was paying attention and the proposal I got reflected that. Any changes we made after contracting were made fairly and response time was awesome. Albert detailed and managed our event as well. One of the selling points for me of this hotel for my group is that all the food is made in house and custom to each group, and I was told changes were encouraged and requested. This is not lip service at this hotel. Every change I requested was easily accommodated. The pricing and concessions that you will get when you contract for a busy time, as I did, won't blow you out of the water but you aren't nickel and dimed at this property once the contract is signed. I personally think is way more important. The execution of my event was flawless and it was clear that the whole hotel knew about our group, our schedule, where we needed shuttle service and when. Every single person loved their hotel room and raved about the property. Even the pickiest of traveler had nothing negative to say after the event. Lastly, billing. The final bill came to me within 3 days and was completely accurate. I didn't have to ask for it! If you're a meeting planner, you know how that can be.
As a traveler, I would stay at this hotel over and over again. I think the word that I would use to describe the hotel and its appointments is "thoughtful." You can tell they considered every detail when planning the room setup, decor, the staffing model, the training, etc. The linens, towels, and robes were luxurious. The products in the bathrooms were lovely and plentiful. The room had decorative touches but was not cluttered. The hotel offers turndown, which is lovely. The hotel bar was welcoming and the bartenders friendly but unintrusive. The hotel restaurant, Union was amazing. We had a group dinner here and it was remarkable.
I think what stands out about the Press Hotel is the pride that each employee has in their workplace. It's clear that the owners of this property care about the hotel, the guests, and the employees. It really shines through when you interact with the staff. They're willing to help and are happy to welcome you into their home. I don't think I've had a more...
Read moreThis was our first trip to the northeast corner of the country, and after doing a little homework we decided to stick with our habit of staying away from chains of any kind, and the Press Hotel looked like the best option for that in Portland.
My wife and I cannot say too many great things about our stay. Our connecting flight was delayed a couple of hours, and when I called the hotel to let them know the front desk attendant was nice and very understanding, and they would ensure the overnight person would be ready for us, and she certainly was when we rolled in around 2am. Check-in was swift and easy, and we had a wonderfully restful night in what we saw was a true-to-advertised room, which sadly has been rare for us.
We had a smaller room with a single king bed, but that did not detract from the quality. The room was modern and inviting, and the bed was soft and comfortable. A bonus for the both of us were the many power outlets that also had USB plugs scattered throughout the room and easily accessable, including one built into the headboard on either side of the bed. For anyone who travels you know that it's hard to find available outlets in a room, let alone these that were particularly convenient. We didn't use the television too much but it was still an excellent quality device.
The bathroom was equally modern and accommodating with a large shower. We also liked the water efficiency toilet.
The Union Restaurant was also excellent. We appreciate the locally sourced ingredients (have tended towards similar restaurants in our home town) and the preparations were visually appealing and delicious to boot. It's a little pricey for the portion size but what we'd expect from a boutique hotel and restaurant. If you want a small snack to hold you over we'd recommend the truffle potato chips.
The staff was helpful in answering all questions we had from borrowing umbrellas (it rained about half the time we were there), to the hotel valet service that was less expensive than the daily parking would be elsewhere in the downtown area. One front desk attendant was especially helpful in recommending some of her favorite local beaches that were less tourist-oriented and therefore less crowded.
Overall we were very pleased with our stay and when we head back up to the Northeast United States we will definitely be staying at the Press...
Read moreIt’s not that The Press is bad. It’s simply the fact that it is not what it once was… not even close. Only several years ago, The Press was a shiny penny in Portland. THE place to stay. Alas, no more. Let me share why. First, the arrival. In previous stays, my wife and I were warmly welcomed back. We’ve stayed at The Press quite a few times. We were even offered a favorite room several times. This go around, no recognition of our many prior stays, no acknowledgement of my Bonvoy status that offers a potential upgrade, no effort to accommodate a nice room for the anniversary being celebrated and worst of all, a somewhat unenthusiastic offer of a choice between a low floor (Bonvoy profile recites my strong preference for a high floor) and a high floor adjacent to the somewhat noisy elevators. Add in the lack of an offer to help with our luggage and you get the idea. The welcome experience was not exactly “Autograph Collection” level much less 5 star. Now the room. The room was stunningly tiny, smaller than every room I have ever stayed in at The Press but even that did not bother us very much. What did bother us was the decor. Yes, it was fine but it is hard not to notice that it is closing in on tired. The art, the rug, the furnishings - nothing terrible, just a bit worn and tired. In the morning, the gracious coffee service that was a nice feature is no longer. The self-service coffee substitute was cold, obviously not fresh, and frankly undrinkable. It felt very AC or Fairfield Inn-like. The Press shuttle car which was a really great convenience heading to dinner is also no more. Curiously, the desk clerk told us the vehicle had broken down. I suspect it has been done away with as cost cutting seems to be the imperative. Hmmm. Even the valet parking, which is now rather expensive, recited a 12 minute wait when we texted despite the fact that it turned out not to be at all busy. When we arrived as requested, the car was not ready. To be fair, the stay overall was pleasant enough and we enjoyed, as we always do, our time in Portland. Problem is that we used to be really excited to go to The Press. Now, it’s just a solid but no better spot than many others in...
