Motel 6 Portland, OR - Central — Attraction in Portland

NOPE, just go by the aiport and pay the extra for a decent place with more honest people.

The bottom of the shower looks like the sole of a shoe that walked through a mile of gum. Also, there’s evidence of a homeless person living by their trash can. Normally I am willing to overlook all of that if management wasn’t so desperate for your cash and can actually get their story straight about whose policy it is for no refunds if you leave early: Booked through Expedia for the weekend but had to leave early. I asked the front desk at night if I can just pay for the one night, or rather the 4 hours, I stayed. Front desk says they need the manager to change Expedia bookings and that they’ll leave a note for them tomorrow to change it. (No one offered me to sign forms when I left by the way this is important later). I called in the next morning around 10:15 but management says they need Expedia to change it (okay…fair enough). Called Expedia and had Expedia call them. Expedia told me Motel 6 (M6) said the refunds are not possible since I didn’t sign some sort of forms or let the front desk know I checked out (I call BS). Expedia asked if it’s okay if I go back down the next day and sign the forms. At least I can get maybe 1 day refunded? I was told by Expedia that M6 said that’s not possible (Why not?) Called the front desk to ask if my booking still active, they said yes (so nothing has changed between that moment and I left so why can’t I sign the so called forms????). They also say they can’t change my booking because it’s actually Expedia’s policy not theirs (Hold on M6, I literally had an Expedia agent call you to get this worked out, they clearly are willing to try to get it resolved but M6 keeps saying no!?) Talked to Expedia and they say that it’s not their policy and M6 always has the final say in the matter. If it’s your policy then own it don’t lie about it. Otherwise the place was clean if you REALLY want to deal with questionable principles. Maybe they can use the money to resurface that shower and pay the homeless person to go to somewhere else or something.

Update: 12/6/24 turns out the hotel is the one that's not being flexible after multiple...

My girlfriend and I went to Portland for a short weekend trip and spent one night here. The experience at the hotel itself was fine - essentially what we expected for the cheap price we found using a third-party booking service. We arrived an hour before check-in and the hotel staff was accommodating in allowing us to get into our room early. Beyond noticing several old, stained mattresses tossed outside - which (in hindsight) should have been a red flag - our stay was uneventful. The hotel is nearby a great brewery and a quick drive from some awesome areas.

Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse once we checked out the following morning. Several hours after departing, I noticed a strange itchy red mark on my partner's shoulder. Since we were en route to the coast, we brushed it off until the next morning - which is when things really took a turn for the worse. [see photo] A quick Google search confirmed our worst fears: BED BUGS.

We called the hotel from a laundromat and spoke with a manager about our concerns. She was very professional and told us that we'd hear back from someone within a day or so after the room had been inspected. Somewhat assured, we went through recommended online suggestions - completely ransacked our belongings, multiple loads of scalding hot laundry and even purchasing brand-new bedding. Seven days of worry went by - and we didn't hear anything back from management. Finally, I called (eight days later), and was told by an employee that the corporate office handled issues like this and that "she had no idea how long it might take to get a response."

Not impressed, Motel 6. We will not be back, and I'd strongly advise any future travelers to do the same.

Disclaimer: I'm an easy-going traveler who is fully aware bed bugs are an unfortunate, but somewhat common travel problem that can impact hotels at all price and star ranges. My main issue here is the lack of communication and follow-through. Also worth noting: this is the first and only one-star review...

Overall my experience was satisfactory. Staying at a motel implies certain expectations and those were all met for good and for ill. The room was large enough not to feel cramped, featuring the two beds, a counter, a tv, and a night stand. With use of the room lamps, lighting was sufficient. Would have enjoyed a table and chair to sit and write/type at, but that's not something I expect necessarily so it's absence wasn't a disappointment per se.

The bathroom was not as clean as I'd have liked and while I understand turnover of guests can be swift and regular, I want to feel of all spaces, that the bed itself and the bathroom are clean and sanitized. The shower in particular felt grimy and looked a little unclean and did not drain well such that I was standing in ankle deep water by the end of my shower (which was simply a rinse, using no products and I am a 30yr old male with short hair). This was room 114. It had drained itself by the time we had returned from a day out and about. I can't say how quickly or slowly but it probably took an hour or two if I had to guess.

The bed itself was adequate and felt clean. I wouldn't call it comfortable but I wouldn't call it uncomfortable either. Motel grade; we got what we paid for, in essence.

The girl working the desk when we arrived, who's named I believe was Shyanne (spelling?) was pleasant without being too sweet or fake, and facilitated our check in efficiently and well. She was a great experience and showed us all due courtesy and assistance.

The location was fantastic. We were within an 30-60 minute walk to a bunch of great shopping and eating and there was a bar/brew pub just down the road a minute or two on foot. Location was fantastic. Easily accessed from the airport via a 30min drive with only a few turns and a jaunt on the I-85. Can't complain.

All in all, this Motel 6 was a solid and stereotypical motel experience. At roughly $70 or so for the night, it served it's purpose nicely for someone popping into town for...
