In a digital world, video stores are generally a thing of the past. Like twenty plus years ago.... But Movie Madness is still holding on, going strong. The selection of films here is not the Blockbuster of your childhood. This is a shop catering to film buffs, geeks, aficionados, and their like. You can find all the Hitchcock films, or anything that Audrey Hepburn was in, or a cult classic that only you have heard of. The best thing about Movie Madness is that the staff are bigger geeks about film than you or me, and they'll help you sort out what you're looking for even if you're not certain when you go in. As a bonus to the drunk, high, highly focused, easily entertained, and general film folk: check out the assortment of film costumes and memorabilia on display. It's a fun way to pass from the classics category to wherever else you're browsing.

I deeply regret not coming in sooner; Movie Madness is a Portland treasure! The staff was is extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. It's the only video store I know if that's worth a visit just to browse around. Thank you for carrying a movie that was never released on DVD- The Naked Man starring Michael Rappaport and co-written by Ethan Cohen. I have no idea why this beautifully quirky film wasn't released on DVD because I would confidently put it up against a few Cohen Brothers films. I'm so glad I held on to my VCR for this! If you know a chiropractor, you HAVE to introduce this film to them! You also have another of my all-time quirky favorites- The Dark Backward, starring Judd Nelson, Bill Paxton (in a superbly unhinged performance), Wayne Newton, James Caan and Rob Lowe.

As the video delivery landscape continues to evolve, Movie Madness continues doing what they have always done best - having whatever you're looking for. We recently had a visitor who remembered a film that she had only seen in the theater in the early 1950s. The staff at Movie Madness was able to point us to the right part of the store, and I received the benefit of yet again seeing something from this wonderful store that I had never seen before. If you want to expand your horizons beyond the latest sequels in the multiplex, you owe it to yourself to wander the shelves at Movie Madness

If you want to rent movies, they have a very large selection. Their selection of horror movies is clearly their selling point, it's huge and full of obscure horror titles and subgenres.

Unfortunately, I'm not interested in horror movies, I don't live anywhere near their place so renting from/returning a movie to them is incredibly impractical.

My boyfriend and I had driven out here because we were within a 10 minute drive at the time, and were on the hunt to buy a very well-known movie from the 90s that we were really in the mood to watch that night and couldn't find anywhere. On teh interwebz, it said they had movies for sale. So we felt adventurous and drove over.

Do not drive over if you're just looking to buy a DVD. Their for-sale section is very very small and random.

As an aside, if your google maps/GPS tries to take you on any weird side streets in this neighborhood, ignore it and stick to main streets! We were routed down side streets, it was nearing 4pm so not surprising. But I was honestly scared, these streets (due to people parked on both sides) barely had room for one car to traverse, god forbid a car is coming from another way. I've been down similar roads, where drivers have to kind of give and take to be able to get down the street. But this was real bad, and mildly alarming. But I digress.

When we got to this business, fortunately they had a small off street parking area, with a handful of incredibly narrow parking spaces reserved for their customers. Because there was NO street parking to be found within a several-block area.

This place has that seedy, SE Portland, "keep Portland weird" vibe, that you may or may not enjoy. There's cool "vintage" and then there's just old and run-down. This is more the latter. I can't say it was not CLEAN, per se. Just dingey and old.

As far as the 'museum', it was mildly interesting. It's features a random assortment of costumes from various movies. Nothing too impressive or awe-inspiring, many of the movies I've never heard of. There's also a few props, and a lot of masks and prosthetic heads and just large-scale costume-looking heads? Not sure if those are considered part of the museum or just decor.

My boyfriend possibly could have considered renting some movies, he happens to be a somewhat enthusiastic horror movie fan, but he currently lives in Beaverton, I live even further away. So, just not worth it for that. But I wish them well as a quirky, old little business trying to survive in the world of online movie rentals, sales, and streaming. But I can't imagine I would...

i went here today it was cool i was excited because i took my little brother and mother there to show them the things from movies and the selection of movies i thought you could buy any of the 8000 plus movies i picked out 3 titles 2 local wrestling dvds and silent night deadly night i understand why silent night deadly night is a rental but two dvds no-one has rented in years are for rent? it makes no sense i recommend them labeling there dvds rent or buy i would go back and buy a lot of dvds i have wanted over the years BUT you dont know if its a rent or buy dvd if they fix that and get employees who want to be there instead of seeming like do i really have to be here it would be a great place i feel a bit let down since the lady behind the counter was rather rude just wanted a credit card didn't offer me too buy the dvds (remember these are local professional wrestling dvds not WWE or any major company and they are from 2011) just went straight to the money shaking my head i will not be back unless im there to show off the collection of items they have but i wont do business here plus who really rents now days when you can buy dvds on your tv or craigslist cool little shop but needs too label there...

I'm a fairly experienced video store customer. I started my journey in stores filled with Video Home System cassettes and customers with mullets and denim (yes...including the women it was the fashionable Midwest after all).

Through my years on this spinning globe I've been to other independent stores of good quality.

I can safely say MM is very likely the best movie rental store in the United States and it sits right here in this fine Rose City. It offers things you can't even get digitally streamed.

Even if you could get it streamed you miss out on the sweet sweet goodness of the extras on say Criterion collection versions. I recently rented Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance, watched all the extra content providing more info, and I'm changed forever.

Also, if you streamed it you'd like pay the same price or more to the Evil Empire that is Amazon.

Just check MM out (for pickup or in store browse) and the easy to use drop boxes around town. It's a great store and my visits for rentals during the Plague year(s ?) likely saved parts of my sanity.

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with MM. I just...
