I've had many mixed experiences with this place. Started going weekly about 5-6 years ago, for the Sunday School of Magic weekly event for kids. I did that for at least two years, and it was almost always fun and exciting. At that time, I would have rated 5 stars, school of magic was great back then. I've been slowly going less and less, at first it was because I met with friends at their houses (or mine) to play magic. I still went to tournaments, and got along well with most people there.
The reason I have not gone as often as I used to is not a lack of interest or a packed schedule with school and everything, but its because I just haven't found it as friendly. I experienced a tournament where a man who won every single round was put in last, and the staff did not make any fix. The most ridiculous thing that happened during a tournament there, however, occurred when I called out another boy my age on cheating during a tournament of Magic. I don't really know, but this boy seemed like he did have some sort of mental issue related to anger or something. When things were not going his way, he lunged across the table and strangled me for a couple of seconds. Getting him off of me is the only time I have ever used any of my martial arts training in full force. Now I understand that there isn't much Ron, the owner, could have done to stop this from happening, but my problem here is that Ron never even flinched. He stood by and let things happen, and even gave the other boy the win for the round despite his assaulting of his opponent.
I still kept going to otherworlds, and though this boy who attacked me was somehow still being let into these tournaments and I don't know if this is a coincidence or on purpose, I have since never been matched against him in a tournament. If Ron has purposely kept us away from each other, then I do thank him very much for that.
My final experience with OtherWorlds Games was not good, and this time it is 100% on Ron. I visited the store with a friend and when we left Ron gave us a flyer for a promotion. It was exciting, as the deal was for the next couple of months, from 3-5pm on week days, students with ID could purchase MTG booster packs that cost $4.20 or less for $3 each, which is a great deal if you ask me. I did use this deal once successfully. The very last time I went to this store was still in the first week of March, and before this deal was supposed to end, which based on the flyer (which I still have) was March 18th. I was buying a buying a few packs and when I did ask about the deal, Ron told me that such a deal never existed, and never would exist. Ok fine that deal was almost too good, and I could understand why Ron might have to cancel it. But why lie directly to a long time loyal customer over it? I really don't get it, but at that moment where I could see just how poor Ron treats even his most loyal customers, I quietly bought my last pack from Ron, sat down and played a pack war with a friend, and walked out. Too bad the place in just a 5 minute walk from my house has turned so bad.
I can't give a 1 star rating despite this treatment I received on my last visit because despite all of the bad experienced I have had at this store, I had plenty of fun times and great experiences as well.
Pros: -Amazing location right in Hillsdale -generally strong and friendly community -great for younger kids who can attend School of Magic
Cons: -poor customer service and business practices -somewhat poorly organized -prices fluctuate a lot at least for MTG products
To sum it up, OtherWorlds Games is a great store for local visitors and younger kids, but if you live closer to another comic/game shop that offers everything you use at this store, then don't go here. Personally, however, I am trying some other stores out for general retail and MTG tournaments. I might return to OtherWorlds Games someday, it really just depends on what else I can find here...
Read moreI have been a loyal customer at Other Worlds for a little over 6 years. Overall, I enjoyed my experience there. Unfortunately, recent events at the Eldritch Moon prerelease has completely changed my opinion of the storefront and the owner in general.
At the prerelease, I was starving and wanted to know how much time was left in the round so that I could eat something. As I approached Ron, I didn't realize he was with another customer. He shooed me away to try and complete the sale. I want to remind you (the reader) that at the time I DIDN'T KNOW that he was with another customer (they were off by the board game section I think), and would never intentionally interrupt him. Afterwards I asked again how much time was in the round, to which Ron rudely responded something along the lines of "you're going to interrupt me and a sale for knowing how much time is in the round?" I told him that I didn't know, but he didn't respond to me. In shock, I returned to my seat as he said "one minute left in round!"
Clearly, my 6 years as a customer didn't give hime the confidence that I would never intentionally interrupt his conversation. It is unfortunate that he scolded me like a 7 year old child and didn't respond to me for the rest of the night. Here are the major reasons why I was so upset for the rest of the night:
I AM A CUSTOMER TOO. I have supported Other Worlds for years, spending hundreds of dollars on comics and magic cards. As a loyal customer, I deserve equal respect as someone who is currently paying for something. I spent money that night too, and Ron should have accommodated both the event and whoever was purchasing stuff at the store. It really wasn't that big of a question/poor customer service. If it is REALLY so offensive to ask time in round, Ron should have placed some timer indicating time in round, like every other MTG store I have ever been to. It was a quick question that really wouldn't take too much time. Even if Ron was stressed about the big event, that doesn't excuse him belittling me rather than saying something along the lines of "I'll get back to you soon." That customer service for ALL customers was very poor that night. Respect should be given to all customers, not the one that is immediately handing you cash.
After a few days to think, I have no ill will towards Other Worlds. I wish it all the best. I am just disappointed in the store. Ron's actions were completely uncalled for. The fact that he would think that a loyal customer would intentionally interrupt him (warranting being scolded like a child rather than an adult) is sad at the least and insulting at the worst. I refuse to support a store that so blatantly disrespected me for asking one small question out of line.
I will take my hard earned dollar to a store that respects me and knows I would never...
Read moreBy far the worst costumer service I have ever experienced and I have been to plenty of DMVs. The store owner talked to us like lowlife, scamming, children. After coming to this store several times, it seemed decent at first, I paid for my boyfriend and I to play in the MTG pre-release for my birthday. If you don't already know, playing a pre-release is sort of like a partial gamble, you pay for some cards and hope to win more. We brought with us a friend (who we drove there), the store owner, who already knew he had come with us, waited until during the timed deck-building portion of the tournament to come berate our friend about how he can't stay if he is not in the tournament. I could go on about how rude the store owner was concerning this but instead I will just say my friend had to wait outside for 5 hours. So after the stress of that, I am wondering where the smell that is bothering my allergy is coming from, by the second round I realize the store is selling peanut m&m so from my seat (this is also timed) I call out "sorry but could you please, please stop selling peanuts tonight... I am life threateningly allergic." To this he was atrociously rude. I got a big No followed by being told how I was wrong about my own allergies " don't eat them" and finally when I had already decided to suck it up and risk it knowing at best I would be coughing all night and get a lasting rash, he forced me to come out side, essentially to ask me to stop talking about it (when I already had). This resulted in not being able to finish more then 1 game of a 3 game round which most definitely resulted in me not placing well enough to win any prize support. It may sound like short conversations that only took a bit of time but this store owner has a knack for continuing to talk without saying much. At least I got a pack for being in costume, which was suppose to be an extra contest but wasn't really since he didn't seem to tell people about it in person, just a small note on the website... I am thankful to the people who spoke up for me after all this as I did not have the nerve to...
