It was Thomas Paine who convinced the militia to fight on and help Washington get his first couple of victories after losing 7 battles in a row, and was running scared until Paine wrote the crisis papers that reinvigorated the troops. John Adam's once said "Without the pen of Paine, the sword of Washington would have been wielded in vain."

Read moreThe Monument is beautiful, and in same area is Morven Museum, as well as a few cool sculptures on walkway in front of museum. The Albert Einstein Memorial is close as well. We didn't visit Morven Museum yet, but you can walk around house and see gardens as well.as the old pool house. The garden has remnants of an old garden wall as well as great climbing plants.
