This is a great unique experience.. I would recommend planning your trip on a new moon day. The darker the night, the brighter the luminance. The guides don’t recommend cell phone. If you really wanted to take a video, would recommend an iPhone 13 or above. Take the picture or video and then increase the exposure settings to see the glow..the pick up area references Abe’s tour, however it is the same pick up for vieques Kayak as well. I would recommend the operators to have their own signboards to avoid confusion. I removed one star because there is no personal time..you keep rowing and moving, stop for some information and then continue. They gave about 10 mins providing a Tarp above each kayaker so that the glow is bright. You’ll have two mins to splash your hands in the water and see the glow. This being the primary attraction, they should allow for more time.. I was not able to record the video as we had to keep moving. Ended up paddling stronger so that my wife can take the photos and videos.. the guides are friendly and jovial. The island is very safe. Do not get intimated by the wild horses. They are friendly. Recommend a stay near Esperanza if you require a transportation. It may be difficult to get a taxi at night when you return. Our place was a 12 min walk. Added a picture...
Read moreOur Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Trip with Vieques Kayaks Bio Bay was absolutely amazing! The clear-bottomed kayaks gave us a surreal view of the glowing water, and our guide was fun, knowledgeable, and made the experience truly unforgettable. Seeing the bioluminescent water up close was nothing short of magical.
That said, I only write reviews when I wish I had known something beforehand: the tour starts and ends in a pretty remote, isolated parking lot. If you take one of the later trips, it can feel a little scary heading back on your own. By the time we finished, the nearby city of Esperanza was completely shut down, and even though the island claimed to have a 24/7 taxi service, they all shut down by 10:00 pm. Staying on the other side of the island meant we had a nerve-wracking journey back to our hotel.
Overall, the experience itself is unforgettable and worth it, just make sure you plan your transportation in advance if you’re doing...
Read moreI definitely recommend Vieques Kayak for a bio bay tour! We booked the 9pm tour with them, and I'm so glad we did. Our small group was the only one in the bay at that time, which made for a really peaceful experience. Our guide mentioned that they go to a different area than most groups, which kept us away from the crowds. We were really able to enjoy the bioluminescence, the incredible night sky and the kayaking without anyone else around. Our guides were knowledgeable and fun, it was fascinating learning about the ecosystem of the bay. They were also very accommodating when our transportation was late.
The bio bay itself was such a cool, once in a lifetime experience. We were only in Puerto Rico for 3 nights and flew over from San Juan specifically for this, which was absolutely worth the effort! Vieques itself seemed like a great spot I'm excited to come back to...
