I'd give 50 stars if I could! We're almost one year into a historical/science tour of the US and this place is in our top 3 spots!! (The other 2 are both in Alburquerque, NM.) The students working there were friendly and knowledgable and I learned a lot from Jack in the gift shop.

When I first rolled out of the elevator (in a wheelchair), I was met with huge dinosaurs in my face. Incredible! I turned to the left and found great exhibits on the fossils coming out of the Badlands. Even though I was at the Badlands visitors center just the day before - there was gobs of new information here.

From complete fossils, to amazing individuals pieces - the whole area was teeming with excitement for me. The way they've laid out the skeletons really makes them 'come alive' and my imagination was going wild.

On the other side of the museum it was all about rocks. My dad was a chemist at a copper mine, so I'd grown up learning a lot of what was there - and there was still something new around every corner - what a fun place!

My only regret is that we forgot to take some rocks we have questions about, but one of the students happily gave me an email address to send pictures to. So hopefully my questions will get answered even after we leave the area!

I really think the only way I could've had more fun (aside from remembering to bring the rocks in) is if I were able to go there every day. LOVE...

The South Dakota School of Mines Museum of Geology is an extraordinary destination that exceeded all my expectations. From the moment I stepped through the doors, I was transported into the depths of Earth’s history. The museum houses an impressive collection, including an incredible array of prehistoric fossils, rare minerals, and even full dinosaur skeletons that are simply awe-inspiring. I was particularly struck by the beautifully displayed trilobites and the vibrant mineral exhibits that showcase the region's geological richness. The museum's exhibits are engaging and educational, yet never overwhelming, making it accessible for visitors of all ages. The attention to detail and the interactive features invite you to explore and learn at your own pace. The staff are passionate and eager to share their expertise, making every visit feel personal and enriching. For anyone with an interest in paleontology, geology, or just the natural world, this museum is an absolute must-see. An unforgettable experience that left me in awe of...

I just went and it was free or maybe it's suggested that you donate and I didn't realize... at least there was no pressure to donate but I would have if I noticed the donation box. Either way it was a awesome place to learn a little bit about the areas geology and prehistoric past . It's not a huge place so it won't take you long to make your way through if you wanted to be quick about it but they have lots of fossils and awesome rocks / minerals and information to read if you want to take it slow . Very cool place . They also have a gift shop with unopened geodes for sale for not much money , good fun for the kids to open . I really wanted one but I already have so many and really had no place to put it maybe next time I will get some . I love geology and I needed a place to get out of the rainy weather during the Sturgis rally last weekend , They were really nice and welcoming... Thanks for...

Best part aside from its incredible breadth and quality: it’s free to visit! They have fossils large and small, local and international, spanning across several eons of time. There is also an incredible display of minerals, meteorites, and fluorescent minerals. The gift shop is reasonably prices too. My pictures are just a SMALL FRACTION of what’s there and don’t include any of the large fossils or meteorites. I arrived too late in the day this particular visit to take as many photos as I wanted; it’s easy to spend several hours there (and I have!).

Was difficult to get to as it wasn't even on my radar of being on the college campus admissions building. Once we found it and got there, we had a great time. The skeletons that were there are massive in size and everything displayed wonderfully. Added with the bonus of the geology part! They had a glow in the dark walk through of rocks that light up. Was so neat. Also love how kid friendly this place is. Had a great activity set up for the kiddos to enjoy!

Wow, very fun! Their selection of dead things was nice. Some popular guys, but also odd balls you rarely see in museums like super early canines. The rock section was the best. Lots of extremely well curated and informative displays. Lots of cabinets with different rocks of the same group like halides and some paragraphs for laymen to understand. And lots of puns, as a warning.
