I recommend audio recording every interaction you have with Shannon providers moving forward. Shannon will protect their providers' unethical behavior and you may want to have your own evidence available. I cannot adequately express how devastated I was to realize I could not trust my provider to behave with integrity - and worse, Shannon protected this provider's behavior.
I visited a Shannon clinic to get treatment for covid, a respiratory illness. The provider, Deliliah Schnitzer, never listened to my heart or lung sounds, yet found it appropriate to note in my records that I didn't appear ill and was in "absolutely no distress". I visited the clinic specifically because my symptoms had grown increasingly worse over the previous few days - notably, a high fever, severe coughing, and congestion. Her notes inexplicably denied observing evidence of any symptoms at all.
During that appointment, I requested that Delilah prescribe Paxlovid to treat my covid infection, as it is the only approved and recommended treatment currently available. Instead of properly examining me, Delilah spent the entire appointment trying to convince me not to take Paxlovid. Her efforts went far beyond the typical discussion of risks vs benefits and contained numerous instances of incorrect information. She cited outright falsehoods, such as Paxlovid not being meant for mild cases (contradicted by the drug label itself) and warning that it didn't actually help with acute symptoms or decrease odds of long covid (contradicted by peer reviewed studies). She tried to scare me by telling me Paxlovid interacted with "a ton" of medications, suggesting this was unusual and inherently made it unsafe. When asked if any of my specific medications had known interactions with Paxlovid, she admitted they did not.
And this is why I recommend recording your provider interactions: when I submitted a request to correct my medical records, Delilah not only doubled down on the content of her original notes, but also admitted to not fully examining me, stating that a visual exam "counts" as a physical exam. No mention of her misinformation about Paxlovid was present in Shannon's response to me. Shannon backed this provider and appropriate corrections to my record were not made. Shannon claims they take these kinds of complaints very seriously, but it's my observation that the provider was believed at face value while it was implied that I was making things up.
So record your interactions, folks, because Shannon will protect their providers' unethical behavior. The only way to challenge inaccurate provider notes may depend on you being able to provide an actual recording that they can't ignore. Remember, Texas is a one-party consent state for audio recordings - it's 100% legal to record your own...
Read moreThis is by far the WORST experience! It started with the receptionist demanding 102 thousand dollars for surgery upfront. We explained all this was set up the day before wr can’t pay that and would need a payment plan she still demanded the money and my mother who knows this was to save her life thought she couldn’t get the surgery and was going to die she collapsed in tears right there as I tried to speak to the receptionist about how we would take care of this bill. She finally sent us to the 3rd floor where we were met with a nurse who said go down the hall with no further instructions. We sat in a waiting room for 2 hours after the scheduled procedure and tried to get info from anyone about what was going on. After she was taken to a room the nurse was trying to catch up on who the patient was and couldn’t answer my questions we had to wait for the dr. After the procedure was done the dr came to speak to us and after another 2 hours I had to ask the nurse what was taking so long in recovery was she ok etc. My mother had a portion of her lung removed. From check in till 12 hours later it has been a nightmare. Not being kept informed of what is going on as well as managing her pain is a issue. The day nurse did great but the night nurse is lazy! We have stayed with my mother and have done more to take care of her and advocate for her with us family having medical experience it helps but this is not our facility we work at, this is the employees who do. The nurse has gone completely against the dr advice when he left. He disconnected her iv and “forgot” to put it back together I asked him and he said oh did she get put back in bed: she was put back in bed over 30 mins prior. She has a schedule for pain meds and the nurse has decided his own schedule for her meds. We have had to plead for her to be checked. When we stated she needed to go the bathroom which the dr and previous nurse have it put on board she needs to move move move! The night nurse suggested a bed pan. And even suggest calling the surgeon to lower her iv so she doesn’t have to keep getting up to go to the bathroom even though my mother regardless of pain is trying to sit up and move and cough like the dr told her before he left this evening. I’ve walked out numerous times to this same nurse watching basketball on his cell phone. Very unprofessional and most definitely will be looking at transferring her care to a diff facility for follow ups. I would never recommend this hospital to my...
Read moreI am writing to formally report a deeply upsetting incident involving two x-ray technicians, Dennis and Will, at your clinic. This is not the first time these individuals have disrespected my mother, but this most recent encounter was beyond unacceptable—it was traumatizing.
An older tall white man who noticeably slouches, acted aggressively, unprofessionally, and racially insensitive toward both my mother and me. When my mother entered the x-ray room, she stated that her right leg was in pain. Instead of listening or checking the paperwork from her doctor, Dennis rolled his eyes and shouted, “Which leg are we doing?” in a degrading tone. My mother calmly replied that the doctor had already written it down, but the hostility continued.
The second technician (Mexican descent with noticeable acne scars), was equally disrespectful. He was rough with my mother’s leg, causing her pain while positioning her for the x-ray, and did not provide clear instructions. He treated her with carelessness and contempt, at one point even kicking her shoe as if she were not deserving of basic human decency.
To make matters worse, both Dennis and Will were seen laughing and joking at my mother’s expense. This wasn’t just unprofessional—it was humiliating and emotionally damaging. My mother’s blood pressure rose so high from the emotional stress that the medical staff couldn’t proceed with her vitals. She developed a headache and was visibly shaken, wanting to leave the clinic and forgo treatment altogether.
When we initially asked for their names to file a complaint, we were refused. Only upon leaving, after insisting again, did the front desk staff give us their names but no last name to file a formal complaint. Dr. King was notified but simply apologized and never followed up. A nurse later came in to say, “Sorry about what you went through,” which felt dismissive given the seriousness of what occurred.
We came to your clinic seeking care and left with emotional trauma. My mother is trying to heal, but how can patients get better when staff treat them with cruelty and disrespect? This kind of behavior from medical professionals is completely unacceptable and must be addressed immediately.
I urge you to take this matter seriously. I expect a thorough investigation and an appropriate response regarding the behavior of Dennis and Will.
Sincerely, Melissa Calderon
