This review is for Children's story telling time sessions and friendliness of staff. We have been living in San Dimas since 1985. Our 2 daughters grew up using the library every weekend and the community center next to it taking gym and Hawaiian dance classes. On a school day Friday 2/22/2019, I took my 2.5 years old granddaughter to the library to attend their story telling time. Upon entering the library, the lady at the counter overheard us talking about story time. She said we needed a ticket and gave us one. I was wondering why a ticket was needed. There were only 10 kids in a room that holds 50. When I held my granddaughter's hand and walked slowly in, the lady with purple hair that looked like story teller pointed to us and asked, "she's too old, how old is she?' I replied that she is 2 and a half. She said the session is for toddlers. Come on, is 2.5 years old considered toddler? So what if a kid is a few years older that comes with an adult and is quiet? I saw a couple of kids who could walk too, but they were not questioned. I know I haven't been to this library for a long time and I do not look familiar to anyone there. This experience made me feel I and my granddaughter were not welcome to a county facility that I have been paying taxes for the past 40 years. After the session, I took my granddaughter to the play area where she used the computer and played some toys. At 10:30, there was another story time session(smarty pants). We intended to go there but was stopped. I did not know we had to sign up before hand. This time there were about 20 kids(going to the same room that holds 50). After a protest to the librarian, I was given a stay by ticket. I understand the library may need to limit the number of attendees during summer or when schools are not in session. But on a school day, there are only a handful of preschool kids that come to the library as evidenced this Friday 2/22. So do you think this is necessary to waste man power and discourage kids using the library? I have traveled a lot. I can say this is the only library in this world that does not welcome or tries to prevent patrons from using it. I used to take my 2 other older granddaughters to Glendora Library. For 4 or 5 years, we went there every Monday and Tuesday. Many days, there were a lot more kids attending, maybe 2 or 3 times more than that in San Dimas. Never once did I hear the librarians Cindy and Rebecca question the parents about kids's age. Everyone was made welcome and I could see both parents, grandparents and kids totally enjoyed and had a fun time. Is this the different between a city funded and county...
Read moreThe Public Library is still one of our most valuable free resources. It's a wonderful place to sit and read or find the perfect book to borrow for home enjoyment. This library is spacious and well maintained. It is located off of Second St. and Walnut (next door to the City Hall). The service was friendly. Betty and Gabriel were knowledgeable and welcoming. I wasn't aware you can obtain a laptop to use (if available) instead of sitting at a desktop while visiting. The library also lends Chromebooks (internet provided) or a hotspot (if available) to use at home for up to 3 weeks . You can make copies from hardcopy or your phone for fifteen cents each. You can place a hold request for books, laptops, hotspots etc. by phone or in person. If you have current up to date information, obtaining a library card is easy. There is even an election ballot drop off box, right outside the door. There is a small park with a playground right next to the adequately sized...
Read morethe librarian must rein in the unnecessary noise created by the staff or visitors - the library is not a social hall nor a playground; 2. the librarian must do something about the carts or flooring close to the main counter - the cart(s) are making a horrible loud noise as they are being pushed along the aisles; 3. the librarian must push for a library that is conducive for learning/studying, that is, noise free. If one goes to the L.A. central library in downtown, if you converse loudly, a library staff will promptly talk to you. 4. other than the noise, the staff are great in helping my issues/concerns; the library is clean all the time; and...
