Great spot for walks and checking out the Golden Gate.

For info, Grok says:

Overview Crissy Field South Beach—often just called Crissy Beach or the East Beach section of Crissy Field—is a popular, family-friendly sandy shoreline within San Francisco’s Crissy Field in the Presidio (now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area). Stretching about 0.7 miles along the bay from the historic Warming Hut (west) to the Torpedo Wharf and Crissy Field Center (east), this south-facing beach offers calm, shallow waters ideal for wading, picnics, and kite-flying, with postcard views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the Marin Headlands. Unlike the wilder Baker Beach to the west, Crissy’s south beach is sheltered, dog-friendly (on-leash east of the marsh, off-leash in designated zones), and packed with amenities—making it a go-to for locals, tourists, and windsurfers alike. History Once a U.S. Army airfield (1919–1936) used for early aviation experiments, Crissy Field was transformed in the late 1990s through a $34 million restoration led by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. The project removed concrete runways, reintroduced native dunes and a tidal marsh, and created the beachfront promenade we see today. Opened in 2001, it’s now a model of urban ecological restoration—complete with a 20-acre restored wetland that filters stormwater and supports 100+ bird species. The name “Crissy” honors Major Dana Crissy, an early aviator who died in a 1919 crash. What to Expect • Beach & Water: Fine sand, gentle slope into calm SF Bay waters (cold year-round, ~55°F). Great for kids to splash, but no lifeguards—swim at your own risk. Strong currents beyond the break. • Activities: ◦ Windsurfing/kiteboarding: World-class launch spot (especially near the St. Francis Yacht Club). ◦ Dog paradise: Off-leash area west of the marsh; on-leash east. ◦ Picnics & BBQs: Tables, grills, and grassy areas. ◦ Biking/walking: Flat, paved Golden Gate Promenade connects to the bridge (1.5 miles west). • Views: Iconic Golden Gate Bridge frame (especially at sunrise), Alcatraz, sailboats, and the city skyline. • Wildlife: Snowy plovers (protected—stay out of roped areas), harbor seals, and migratory birds in the marsh. Key Spots Along South Beach 1 Torpedo Wharf (east end): Historic pier for crabbing/fishing (license required). Best bridge views. 2 Crissy Field Center: Eco-education hub with exhibits, restrooms, and the Warming Hut Café (coffee, snacks, park store). 3 West Bluff Picnic Area: Grassy knolls with BBQs and wind protection. 4 Marsh & Boardwalk: Wooden paths through restored wetlands—great for birding. Practical Info • Parking: Free lots at East Beach (near Sports Basement) and along Marine Drive. Arrive early on weekends. • Transit: Muni 43 or Presidio GO Shuttle from downtown. • Hours: Open sunrise to sunset (promenade 24/7). • Rules: No alcohol, no fires outside grills, dogs must be leashed near marsh to protect wildlife. • Best Times: ◦ Sunrise for fog-free bridge shots. ◦ Weekdays to avoid crowds. ◦ Summer for warmest beach days (still bring layers—SF wind!). Pro Tips • Rent bikes at Sports Basement (inside a restored hangar) and ride to Hopper’s Hands or the bridge. • Grab fish & chips from the Warming Hut and eat on the pier. • Check tide charts—low tide reveals more sand for kids/dogs. • Avoid weekends if you hate parking stress. Crissy Field South Beach is San Francisco’s backyard beach—urban, scenic, and surprisingly wild. Whether you’re flying a kite under the bridge, watching windsurfers launch, or just soaking in the views with a coffee, it’s a must-visit slice of the Bay. For real-time conditions, check @presidiopark on X or...

Fascinating developments at Crissy Field East and South Beaches. A creek provides fresh water entering the Marsh. Drainage to SF Bay meandered through the beach. Tidal action eroded the beach and ultimately blocked drainage. “Crissy Lake” existed until NPS-monitored toxicity became unsafe. Bulldozers sealed the marsh-‘lake’ connection by creating direct drainage to the bay. The NPS created openings so the ‘lake’ drained. Beach sand was moved to restore a large beach. Mother Nature WINS. About 10 days later, the tide eroded the sand and gradually flooded into the lower...
