If you're planning to spend any time exploring the Presidio, you should definitely take 30 minutes or so to check out the Presidio Visitor Center and learn about the long history of this land. Interactive exhibits explain all the eras of this part of the peninsula, from the original indigenous people to the military base to the current national park. The visitors center does a great job of putting it all into context. A lot of thought went into presenting a well balanced, objective perspective that respects all the people who have called the Presidio home. Lots of informative signage along with artifacts and photos from long ago. This is a great starting point for history buffs interested in the Ohlone people, the Spanish occupation, San Francisco, Crissy Field, Fort Point, and the Golden Gate. The Center also functions as a gift shop with various, magnetics, tees, trinkets, and a few snacks. Grab a bite at one of the food trucks across the street and enjoy the Presidio Tunnel Tops! (Read my review of the Tunnel Tops, a must-see, terrific urban park!)

Yeah. It's finally open! Very cool interactive displays. There are two giant iPads, for example, that allow you to explore and connect with the people who came before in the place that is all around us now. Learn about the Ohlone, the Spanish, and the military Fort that turned into a National Park. The center is right next to the transit center/bus station so it is a great way to start your visit at the Presidio. Use the giant topo map at the entrance to figure out where to go next. Besides exhibits there are also plenty of books and souvenirs. Find a fog globe, a colorful bike shirt or a book about Alcatraz.

A former U.S. Army post that has been around for over a hundred years. The post is closed and is a national park now. There are various activities such as golf, hiking, biking or walking and exploring the disney museum, the Presidio Hotel, and Visitor Center. The history and architecture of the buildings is amazing. Plenty of areas to explore and views of the Golden Gate Bridge, city scape and Alcatraz Island from various points

Really want to know about the Presidio? Stop by the visitor center and take one of their free tours. Inside the center you can ask questions, get directions, see lots of displays and exhibits or watch a quick video on your own. I also like their poster designs, very simple but iconic. Good souvenirs from t-shirts, frig magnet and more. It was worth a stop. Clean bathrooms and kids playground in the back.

We had the best time moving about The Presidio's grounds and through the beauty of the gardens, landscapes, fort structures and museums! Magical moments ,Misty Sky's, and sea swept winds whirled and cooled us down from our caravanning exploration. Real nice people and touring crew! " Over and out"... Dan Geske Dan Geske
