Gus' Discount Fishing Tackle — Attraction in San Francisco

Interesting. As a woman of color I don’t look like a person who fishes but I have, I know how to filet and cook a fish myself. However, I’d like to widen my knowledge and continue to learn from others… I walked in here and asked about leaning how to fish acting as if I didn’t know anything and if there was anyone I can learn from or if they had classes/guides.

Why was my response so different from the other reviews? I was told to just go out and that there’s lots of people who fish and she went on to talk about all the photos of people who fish but gave me no real fishing advice, no pointers on where or how to start or what local programs or places I could look into… maybe because I asked for guidance and not to buy gear? I was just in the area and happened to stumble upon the store for the first time so it wasn’t my intention to buy gear that day but if someone is truly passionate about sharing the sport I’d expect more than a half-assed answer and a brag about everyone else who has fished already and shared their photo on the wall... maybe her thought was this person isn’t going to buy anything right now so it’s not worth my time to take a minute to give real support but lady… I would totally gladly buy some things another time if I got...

We LOVE this place!

It is rare to find a mom and pop shop in SF with genuinely nice people who care about their customers but Gus' is exactly that. Honestly I may go back just to hang out because everyone there was so cool and friendly.

My husband and I went in for the first time today and Steph was just amazing and such a delight. She helped us find exactly what we needed and gave us honest advice, AND she even helped us set up our rods and reels to go crabbing! She knew all her repeat customers by name and could tell you the price of anything off the top of her head. Steph was ready to answer any question we had, and then some.

I love that the walls are covered (I mean literally covered) with pictures of customers with their catches, and Steph asked us to email her pics of anything we caught, too, which was so sweet.

I can't stress enough what a gem Gus' is in a city full of slick, over-designed, over-conceptualized shops and restaurants that are staffed by bored Instagram models (or just robots). That being said, there are few businesses anywhere that could meet the extremely high bar Gus' sets for customer service and...

Finally found a real mom & pop place. Need good fishing gear and great service, THEN GO HERE. The lady who runs this place is beyond the expert in fishing. She has all the gear you need for deep sea fishing, pier fishing, land fishing (salt, fresh, etc) and can tell you all the best places to go.

I had a wonderfcul time and I will be returning as long as she is open to get all my future gear. i will also be sending everyone I know to her. if you are new and inexperienced, go to GUS"S and I promise you she will help you. She didn't try to push expense things on me, but asked me what kind of fishing, my level of experience, where I was going, etc. She then gave me options telling me the advantages of each and the disadvantages.

I tell you, I had fun shopping. when in overwhelmed, but...
