Sutro Heights is a beautiful park located in the Outer Richmond neighborhood of San Francisco, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The park is named after Adolph Sutro, a former mayor of San Francisco, who owned the land in the late 19th century.
The park is a hidden gem and a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. It is well-maintained and offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Marin Headlands. Visitors can take a stroll on the park's walking trails, enjoy a picnic, or simply relax on one of the park's benches.
One of the highlights of Sutro Heights is the historic Sutro Baths ruins. The ruins are the remains of an elaborate saltwater swimming complex built in the late 1800s. The complex was destroyed by a fire in 1966, but the ruins still stand today as a testament to San Francisco's rich history.
Another attraction in the park is the statue of King Neptune, which sits atop a large pedestal overlooking the ocean. The statue was originally part of the Sutro Baths complex and was restored and relocated to Sutro Heights in the 1980s.
Overall, Sutro Heights is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the natural beauty and history of San Francisco. It's a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon, take in some incredible views, and learn about the city's rich past. Whether you're a local or a visitor, Sutro Heights is definitely worth...
Read moreMy favorite place to hike in San Francisco!!!
My hike begins by parking at the Ocean Beach area between the two windmills (Dutch & Murphy) you see across the street in Golden Gate Park. I make my way across the Great Highway and then head north on the sidewalk/trail. I cross Fulton street and continue north. When I get to Balboa, I cross the street then head East on Balboa. As soon as you pass La Playa, the hike trail begins to your left with wooden steps. I take the trails through Sutro Heights to get to 48th and Point Lobos Ave, cross Point Lobos Ave and continue on Lands end trail across the street.
Depending on how fit you are, you can continue until you see Baker Beach. If you do this hike, you walked approximately 2.3 miles. If you don't catch an Uber back, lol, you'll have walked a total of 4.6 miles. At a basic stroll, you should be able to get done in under two hours. You can also stop and return sooner. If I only have an hour, I walk out for 30 minutes then come back. You'll figure it out.
Through out this hike, there are many spots to take...
Read moreTruly beautiful Vistas from Sutro Park you sort of have to wonder what the view was like for the folks who used to live there. The house was torn down many many years ago photographs are all that's left… regardless the views are fantastic; they definitely beat the views off Lands End. Unfortunately, and I guess… fortunately for dog owners, the park has gone to the dogs, so be careful where you walk; try to stick to the trails. If you pay close attention around the southern rim of the park you'll see the fake Hill that was built to hide gun emplacements after Pearl Harbor was attacked at the Lookout Point you will see some of the same and if you look over the edge you'll still see some of the Hidden stairs, Etc used by the Army at the time. Just a bit of additional history for those who really want to know about...
