How strange & wonderful to have an Egyptian museum in San Jose of all places. I go to the Rosicrucian with my family a few times a year & we enjoy every visit.
The meditation labyrinth & beautiful gardens are free to the public. There are plenty of places to sit, eat, read, enjoy some peace & quiet. The museum itself has many fascinating artifacts, including several mummies & an Alchemy Exhibit. For a small museum there's a lot to look at.
The museum is well-organized, but those display cases look pretty cheap, suited more for high school sports trophies & not ancient artifacts. Each area is accessed via stairs, which might be an issue for people with mobility aides. No elevator, but there is a platform wheelchair lift -- not sure if you can access all the areas with that, though. The planetarium has been closed every time I've gone except once; they showed an astronomy documentary on a screen. Not sure if they've ever had, or ever will have, an actual planetarium show. The employees never have information about possible future planetarium shows.
A recent addition is a big AI animatronic Thoth -- Egyptian god of writing, magic, wisdom, and the moon -- on display in the Alchemy Exhibit. You can ask him questions in various languages & he dispenses his wisdom. Kids get very excited over him, which is cute, & a crowd soon forms around him. There is an iPad on display transcribing these conversations. Naturally people touch the iPad because at first it seems like that's how you interact with Thoth, but then staff keep telling people not to touch it. It all creates a lot of noise & distraction. This thing is totally out of place in the Alchemy Exhibit.
Still, this is a great place to visit & a very unique part...
ย ย ย Read moreWe came with our school and I have never been before today. Our school was to receive passports, but did not, so many of the students bought them on their own. Many of the passport stamps either didnโt work at all or were severely waning with their fill of ink. There did not appear to be any guides and many of the exhibits are not as engaging as they could be if you wanted to engage students. The self-guided โtourโ requires massive amounts of reading. This is just not going to happen on a field trip. There is not much video and the video that is there is so quiet one cannot hear it and it could not be more drab. The game area has a game that requires gobs of reading and again no video or fun training learning how to play. There are little to no helpers in the museum. The museum suggested we go into the โbeautifulโ gardens to wait our turn and then also to eat lunch. The area is quite unkempt and very lacking in the way of clean up. There was not one garbage can seen anywhere near the gardens for our lunch clean up. Many schools left their trash behind to make for an even messier area. The bathrooms were disgusting with toilets overflowing with muck. This will not be a yearly trip. The museum needs to step it up and get into the 21st century with teaching and understanding learning. You need way more interaction with...
ย ย ย Read moreIf youโre even remotely interested in ancient Egypt, the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is a hidden gem you shouldnโt miss. Tucked away in a serene part of San Jose, the museum offers one of the largest collections of authentic Egyptian artifacts on display in Western North America - from mummies and sarcophagi to everyday tools and religious relics.
The standout feature? A walk-through replica of an ancient tomb that gives you a real sense of how the ancients honored their dead. The layout is thoughtful, the signage is educational without being overwhelming, and the architecture of the building itself, inspired by ancient Egyptian design, adds to the immersive feel.
Itโs not a huge museum, but thatโs part of the charm. You can easily explore everything in 1.5 to 2 hours, making it perfect for a half-day visit. Thereโs also a peaceful garden outside thatโs worth a quiet stroll.
Tips: โข Visit during weekdays to avoid school groups. โข Great for families, history lovers, and photographers. โข The gift shop has some surprisingly cool finds.
Overall, itโs a quirky, well-curated museum with genuine passion behind it. A great way to time travel without leaving...
