This is a great park if you want to get in some walking, or even better for the fishing enthusiast. The pier-like area is wide and yes, very wheelchair/mobility friendly. Theres ample parking, and a few sidewalks that lead to gently arched wooden bridges.
In the summer, there is a shop on site that sells gourmet sub sandwiches, or"grinders" as some call them. There is a large covered shelter area with plenty of picnic tables. It can be reserved for parties etc.
This park is a great place to see lake Erie waterfowl: Beyond the ever-present gulls and Canadian Geese, Bald Eagles are regularly seen, Great Blue Herons, and even Pelicans.
For the angler, youre sure to find channel catfish, yellow perch, walleye, bass, carp and more. There is a small gravel area where you could put in a kayak, but no larger boat launch. There's even an ODNR building nextdoor to the park in case you need to get your fishing license. They dont sell bait, but the Shelby Street bait store is a 5 min drive.
One big thing to remember: This park is right on the water, so most of the time, it's windy. It might also be 15 degrees cooler than locations away from the lake, so bring that windbreaker or hoodie along. Also understand that the weather can turn quickly so check the forecast for Sandusky...
Read moreI drove from State College, PA to this park on April 8, 2024 to view the total solar eclipse.
The park was a nice respite from the loud music and the party at the Jackson Street Pier. It was well-maintained. The piers are much longer than one would think from the maps; it takes over five minutes to walk from the parking lot down to the edge of the water.
I didn't use the playgrounds, but they were in good condition, and I didn't see any dogs. Some parents repeatedly complained about the lack of railings near the water's edge, but no children actually fell in and the edges are well marked with rocks. There is a network of trails, many benches, and even a bridge.
I chose this park by chance, simply because it was where the radar showed the clouds were least likely to be a few hours before, when I was 100 miles away. Another Google reviewer showed there were a lot of parking spots, and that was correct - there were far more than were needed, even on that busy day.
If I lived in Sandusky, I would go here regularly and get my exercise jogging...
Read moreThe best park in Sandusky. Best time to visit is in the spring when the weather isn't too hot and ESPECIALLY when the baby geese are here! Scenery is beautiful, the sound of the birds is peaceful (to me anyway), and the picnic shelter area is perfect for super hot, sunny days. There's also a food area (unfortunately on the same establishment as the restrooms), and I will probably never eat from there, but to each his own. This is the perfect place to relax and unwind, take a break from work, get some fresh air, fish, birdwatch, take pictures, look at Cedar Point, exercise, ride bicycles/rollerblade, walk your dog(s), play on the playground (or take your kids there), have picnics, watch the 4th of July fireworks, or even just hangout with friends and capture memories. Whatever the occasion, this is the place! I strongly recommend this place for everyone—elderly, babies/toddlers, adults, kids, teenagers,...
