I just started Laurie R King's "Island of the Mad". I got to hear her speak at Bookshop Santa Cruz, when her "Dreaming Spies" came out. Bookshop Santa Cruz is one of the best bookshops I have ever been to. Great selection, helpful people, willing to help you get anything they don't have on hand. Very community minded. Great speakers on Book Tours. The Children's Section was one of my daughter's favorite places when she was young. I am so glad Independent Booksellers have survived. I have seen very few places that have this many positive reviews. As for as the very few negative reviews, . . . well . . . , Santa Cruz is a very diverse place and tolerant place, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion . . .

Cant go to Santa Cruz without going to Bookshop Santa Cruz. The staff is so helpful and they will help you find anything you are looking for. They seem to have every book I have ever needed and lots of unique gifts and souvenirs. The Bookshop hosts a variety of events, such as author talks and book signings. Right in the middle of downtown so grab a parking spot and you can walk to lots of shops. Also worth noting that they have public restrooms because it can be difficult to locate one in this area.

Why in God's name is this book store selling subliminal messages on little bags and making them cute and s*** I know it's not the store themselves that's making this but the fact that they're selling it and it's just weird I think it's great and all don't get me wrong like the texture in the feel on the fabric and the materials to use it seems like it's going to stay on there for a while about the same time it's what it says on the bag itself I have a problem with that and just ya

PLEASE READ .......THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE IN SANTA CRUZ COUNTY THAT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN VERY SERIOUSLY....

A month ago I came into Book Shop Santa Cruz , I had got a gift card for my favorite book store and couldn't wait to browse . I spent some time picking out an awesome adut coloring book , then some more time in the spiritual area as I like to study different spiritual believes. About an hour and a half later ( which for me is a pretty common time spent browsing I receive a call from a friend reminding me of how long I have been in the store. I had a birthday party to go to so they were just hoping I wouldn't be late) I quickly got my coloring book and a few other books I had planned to spend with my gift card and headed to the card area to get my friend a birthday card . After seeing the price of the card I realized I wouldn't have enough on the card and couldn't use cash as the $500 I had on my was for rent. So I start to head back to put one of my spiritual books back on the shelf....that's when I was abruptly stopped by a male employee who says mam were going to have to ask you to leave. I said excuse me? He repeats himself by saying we're going to have to ask you to leave ....your showing signs of someone who is going to steal and quit frankly we are tired of baby sitting you. I look around and all these poeple are starting at me... I said stealing? Would you like to check my purse?? I also pull out my gift card and explain to him that I had a card and cash and certainly had no reason to be stealing anything. He says sorry your going to have to leave. I look around at 5he people starring at me and my eyes started to fill up with tears I had never been so embarrassed for doing nothing wrong in my entire life. I couldn't believe people just watched as this was going down and didn't say anything. I walked outside the store and burst into a full panic attack of tears. I couldn't believe what had just happened. This whole time I'm enjoying myself in my favorite book shop there was a team of people apparently singling me out and "babysitting me" waiting for me to slip q book into my purse. Are you kidding me.

I need help on dealing with this situation. What this employee did to me was down right rude and I believe may even be against the law. After showing him my card and money and spilling out the contents of my bag and telling him he could even Pat me down it was apparent that I had not stolen anything yet he still told me I had to leave as I guess taking too long in a book store is too much work for the undercover staff who are hired to baby sit. I want to protest this book store and talk to someone who may know more about the law . To have this place closed or compensated for the extreme amount of depression I have been suffering from since this incident occurred. I think about it often asking myself do I look like a bum or someone who would steal? Am I not good enough to be in my favorite book store? Do I not have enough money or do I look like I don't have enough money to purchase something inside the store? All of these of questions that take a damper on my self esteem now when I go shopping anywhere in public. I feel like as soon as I walk into a store that all these staff memberw are thinking I might steal something, infact most of the time I will carry my cash in my hand just in case they to have undercover babysitters who may think I am up to no good too!!! SHAME ON YOU BOOK SHOP SANTA CRUZ!!!! shame on you. Please email me if you have any answers to my questions or would like to help in the protest against Book Shop Santa Cruz. Themermaidgirl831 at Gmail Dot come. PLEASE SUPPORT ME BY NOT PURCHASING ANYTHING FROM THIS STORE UNTIL I RECIEVE AT LEAST A GENUINE APOLOGY. No one deserves to be treated with such disrespect for no reason. thank...

I’ve always enjoyed my shopping experiences here until today. It’s Biketober in Santa Cruz, and I’m usually reluctant to ride my bike on shopping errands due to the high rate of bike thefts in our town, and because I couldn’t afford to replace my $8500 carbon fiber Enduro race bike. So I locked it right near the front door of BSC, leaving at least 5-1/2’ clear opening so as to not impede foot traffic (there were two signs that blocked the entrance more significantly than my bike.) While shopping I heard an announcement on the PA system asking for the owner of the bike to move it. When I went to talk with the store employee, I said I wasn’t comfortable locking it out of sight from inside the store, but he told me that “the fire department had been cracking down on them for bikes blocking the entrance” and asked me to move it to the racks on the street. The lady at the register told me that they wanted me to move it because people park their bikes at the door so they could steal merchandise and ride away. I would have appreciated if they would have said something like “if you don’t feel safe moving your bike, can you complete your shopping in 10 minutes?” I wasn’t done shopping, but I rode away and will complete my shopping online because I was disappointed and quite honestly I don’t believe that the fire department has made such complaints or “cracked down” on Bookshop Santa Cruz for environmentally conscious shoppers locking their bikes near...

Horrible employee or Manager.. My friend had been setting off the security alarms at doorways the entire day for unknown reasons (we could only assume it was his braces the set it off) and upon leaving the book store it happened again. We were chased down by who I would assume is one of the managers or assistant manager (a tall older gentleman) and asked to remove everything out of his pockets. For the sake of being compliant, he did so while explaining our current predicament. The whole time he was being incredibly rude and extremely presumptuous, while simultaneously blocking off the entrance from other customers (not to mention how embarrassing it must have been to be harassed and treated like a criminal in front of everybody). He would not let us leave until my friend practically stripped down to just his jeans. Another (nicer) lady employee or Manager came and took my friends sweatshirt away and scanned it. I'm most upset about the fact that this guy lacked any amount of common sense or respect, given the fact we left the store in no hurry, and came back to be compliant, i think that anyone and their grandmother could have seen that we were not thieves. All in all, it was a worse experience than going through TSA with half the respect they...
