On Santa Rosa Avenue near the heart of downtown and next to the transit station of the city, this two story movie theater has deep history in Sonoma county. Opened by the Tochinni family, Roxy Stadium has been going at it since 1926. Santa Rosa Cinemas to this day is a family owned company. One of the benefits they offer at this movie theater is a rewards program called Encore Rewards Program. You can ask to sign up at the cash register & you will create an account with the cashier. They also give you a physical card. Don’t worry, it doesn’t cost a thing! The way it works is you get a point for every dollar you spend at the box office or concession stand. Then you get different prizes like a free drink, popcorn, or even a free movie ticket. You get 20 points just for signing up. Another perk they offer is being able to rent out an entire movie theatre for birthdays or events. You can fill out & send a form through their website. They are also in support of the handicapped/disabled. They not only have special parking spots, spacious bathroom stalls, & roomy movie theater seats, but for those that are especially sensory sensitive they have certain times in the morning or afternoon to watch a movie with the lights up & sound down low! You can check on their website for more info at santarosacinemas.com. A fun activity they also hold is their Cult Film Series Festival. For $10 a ticket every Thursday you can join to watch 2 movies in a row where you experience horror, comedies, & sci-fi of the 80s. When’s the last time you were able to watch a classic movie on the big screen? This theatre is open 7 days a week, including holidays. They open at 10am & stop selling tickets & food at 10pm. The last movie will run between 9:30-9:55 & the theater closes after the last movie plays, usually around midnight. The ticket prices vary depending on the theatre, day, and time. If you go to an early showtime, tickets run at $12.75 & $11.75 for children & seniors. Evening showtimes are $15.25 & $11.75 for children & seniors. On Wednesdays they do have discounts & tickets are $6 all around unless you do it online then it’s $8.25. Also, the theatre with the big screen charges extra since it’s the better screen. You can always reserve seating prior to arriving online. The concession stand is overpriced. They sell nachos, hot dogs, Haagen Dazs ice cream, candy. They also sell pretzels, pizza and chicken strips. Nothing less than $5. They sell alcoholic beverages such as beer, cider, wine. Their best & most popular item, their buttered popcorn is the best. It’s $11.75 for a large and a free refill. Small & medium sizes, once again nothing less than $5. Next to the usher they have a side table with condiments for your meals, as well as your popcorn. With its slightly retro 80s ambiance & modern luxury leather recliner seats I have had great times in this movie theatre & have come here since I was a little girl. I love the experience of going to my local movie theatre with good company & good popcorn. However, it seems values have changed in the past few years for Roxy Stadium Movie Theatre. I never see this place clean anymore. Trash on the floor, trash and food on the counters, even on the seats. The customer service is horrible. I understand that youth is a better fit & representation for a job like a movie theatre, but if it doesn’t make your business look good then it doesn’t matter. Your box office cashiers are the nicest out of anywhere in the movie theatre, but even they look like they rather not be there. All the ushers you’ve had are rude & disinterested. Everyone is always on their phones. Managers, if you don’t help get your employees acts together then your business will not make it soon. I would hate to see that. To the beautiful people of Sonoma County and visitors abroad, I would recommend this movie theater for the experience, but just be aware the service itself may not be the best! Good luck on your improvements...
Read moreIf 5 stars is the very best that a movie theater can be then the Roxy 14 is average. Open for about ten years now, the Roxy is more than starting to show it's age. Yes it has high end digital projectors, the ability to show 35mm films and pretty great sound, but over the years the theater has worn down a bit.
Seats are relatively comfortable depending on what screen you're in but in the smaller theaters it can definitely feel cramped if you're around six feet tall. I'm 6'2" and usually don't have a problem stretching out.
You get the basic problems you get from most large theaters run by teenagers; the floors can be sticky (I never wear good shoes to the movies for this reason), audience members can be more than a little obnoxious and the rules about turning off your cell phone are never enforced. When it comes to people talking during your movie it's a real flip of the coin whether or not management will do something about it. I recently had some one talking during a showing of As Above So Below and after politely asking them to be quiet they still didn't stop talking. My friend got the manager who came in, asked them to be quiet and they were for the rest of the film.
This past Monday I went and saw the very last showing of Gone Girl at 9:15pm. A family of 5 came in, none of the children over the age of say 8 or 9... by 30 minutes in the kids were getting restless, kicking seats and talking. I got a manager and they didn't do anything. I'm guessing because it was such a late show and they didn't want the hassle of asking an entire family to stop talking at 10pm.
That's also something I've noticed more and more as I attend Rated R features late at night. It's becoming more and more common for parents to selfishly bring their children to inappropriate films on school nights and then not police their kid's actions. You may say that's not a problem with the theater but the audience and film goers are part of the experience. When you have a certain kind of cliental coming to a business over and over and there's a trend you have to speak up about it. Don't be shocked if you see a horror movie and there's a 9 year old girl crying and their parent not doing anything about it.
Projection is usually standard and sound is pretty good. 3D can sometimes be out of focus. I prefer to go to the theater in Petaluma for 3D films as their theater is newer, cleaner and their projectors are dialed in more accurately.
Snacks are, like most theaters, over priced but the popcorn is fine, and they have junior mints in the fridge which is the best movie snack...
