Best motivation to quit smoking. Tell yourself you can have a cigarette once you get to the top. After climbing those 300 steps on an 88F July day, I was craving oxygen and water way more than any nicotine product. Too be fair, it is a mostly shaded climb, there are rest platforms and benches every 40 steps or so, and a terrifically rewarding view from the top. Platforms look north and south along Kzoo river and there is an abandoned cold war era radar tower perched stop the dune. Be advised if you head back down the dune towards the lake, cell/data service almost completely vanishes and your lucky to get a roaming signal which may prove valuable to call the medivac helicopter when you realize there is no way in heck that you can climb back up that dune to get back to your car. If your an oversized sand-sinking slug like me, be smart and take the paved road back to your car to avoid the inevitable heat stroke. Seriously it was a very pretty and worthwhile climb, just know and respect your physical limitations, and bring water, especially if...
Read moreIt was a hot day, nearly 90 degrees, but we really wanted to see the view from the top of the stairs. We brought water and our 2 mini poodles. It was a Monday afternoon and we only saw 4 other people there; too hot for most.
We enjoyed the view of the Kalamazoo River before we started up. We paced ourselves and stopped a few times as we walked up the stairs. It's not a long hike up, but I could see where it could be taxing for some.
We made it to the top and the view was pretty cool up there. I'd say it's worthwhile.
We saw the Star of Saugatuck leave dock as we were hiking down the stairs. Neat views! We'd do it again. One lady we met was doing it several times for exercise.
You can exit back down the stairs the way you came in or go down the other side that's sandy and that will take you to...
Read moreWe did the stairs + hike + oval beach on a beautiful October day. The temp was upper 50s with sun peaking in and out and it was perfect weather for all the work! Up the stairs to start is very rough! We immediately regretted not bringing some water to drink. Down the dune to get to the beach is not as bad (except when you start thinking about having to walk up it on the way back!) We had such a great time once we got to the beach. It was gorgeous. The water was clear. We looked for fun rocks and sea glass. The hike back up the dune is a challenge for sure! Going down the stairs at the end wasn't too tough. The whole family enjoyed our day, two adults and two kids, ages 8 & 12. I wore boots to give some foot and ankle stability but the rest of the family did the sand...
