My husband and I have been going to Saugataco since it opened in 2024. The food is wonderful. It's a fresh and totally original approach to tacos. The lobster roll tacos and fish and chips tacos (yes, clear pieces of fresh-tasting cod and crumbled potato chips!) are outstanding.
I was disappointed when Lindsay and Alec closed their GROW cafe and the Trap (a fresh take on middle eastern) two years ago, but this place is a great successor. I am so glad they kept the lavender lemonade. It is perfect on a hot summer day or any day! Lavender is so appropriate to this area; Summerhouse Lavender Farm is just outside of Douglas.
Saugataco fills what was an empty niche in Saugatuck/Douglas: excellent food prepared quickly and at reasonable prices. Notice that Saugataco is gratuity -free, too. A lot of the restaurant offerings in our twin towns are costly and involve a sit down dinner.
P.S. There is lovely outdoor seating for warmer days. Puppies and dogs are welcome in the that area. Saugatuck and Douglas are the two most dog-friendly towns I have ever...
Read moreI wanted to give this place 5 stars so badly, because I loved almost everything about it: their board near the entrance explaining how things work, the friendly--intentionally gratuity-free!--service, the coconut shrimp and fish & chips tacos, the pitchers of water by the register, the assortment of salsas, the cute seating outside, the LAVENDER LEMONADE with their own adorable branding on the label. All of these were absolutely fantastic! However, my husband isn't a seafood fan, so he got three of their basic tacos. I only tried a bite of the steak taco (which was actually still the same price as my specialty tacos), and it tasted like slightly bland roast beef, not terrible but not the steak taco filling we were expecting. He said the chicken was pretty bland as well, and the pork just tasted like BBQ sauce. Adding the delicious salsa helped, but we're used to the meat being the star of street tacos so those were a big letdown in an otherwise superb experience. I hope they'll dial in ALL of their meat recipes soon, because, again, there's so much to love...
Read moreI really wanted to like this place more, as the prior reviews were great, and the overall aesthetic of a cute taco place on the water is so freaking lovely! Our party of four all ordered different tacos off the menu, and were all disappointed. All of the tacos were incredibly runny, with grease and juices leaking out and all over into giant pools. The pineapple pork taco was cut up pork sausage with pineapples, corn, cilantro, and while flavorful, was sitting on top of pool of juices. The teens in our party who normally eat anything and everything barely ate their ground beef tacos, proclaiming the taste and texture were "weird." I took a bite, and indeed it was. "Mom's ground beef" tasted like processed meat from a can. The slaw and corn sides were lovely though. Perhaps the other...
