My mother and I were in town for my sister's wedding on Tybee Island. We stayed at the DeSoto because we like to be near lots of shopping and activity. Visiting the city of my namesake was already exciting but I was not ready for the amazing level of southern hospitality I experienced from the time I got off the plane to the last look at the city from the sky on the flight home. I was first wowed by the DeSoto hotel from the online visuals. It looks so beautiful. I was able to do a virtual 3D tour on their website which I appreciate because I knew what to expect upon arriving. The hotel staff were some of the most amazingly kind people I have met in a long time. My mother and I were greeted with smiles and genuine kindness. Hotel staff were helpful with every request and even gave suggestions on where to find great dining and experiences. The vibrant personalities of the hotel staff made our stay incredible. I feel so bad that I can't remember everyone's name but all I can say is that the front desk staff were top-notch. The beautiful woman, who I believe was the head of the hotel housekeeping staff, was just exciting and fun. We loved talking to her and I already miss her Brooklyn accent! Then, the bartender at proof and provisions that taught me what pork rinds and guacamole is all about... I think his name was Francis. The drink he made me knocked my socks off and that food was amazing! And the sweet woman at the 1540 room when my mother and I came in for breakfast was so kind and patient even though they were understaffed. I'm forever grateful to the young lady who made my honey coffee every morning at the Buffalo bayou, and I absolutely cannot forget about the wonderful friendly faces of the valet staff who were so helpful and made me feel so respected and important. I don't travel very often even though I'd like to but being in the city of my namesake was special to me and now, so is the DeSoto. It's perfectly located and very clean and quiet. The view from our room was magnificent! We could even hear the bells of the basilica chiming on the hour and half hour. If I get the chance to come back I absolutely will. We only had one issue and that was that some arrogant, rude and loud guest checked into the room next to us which kept us up all night. While I do not blame the hotel for this, it did dampen the end of my visit a little because I didn't get any sleep the night before very early flight. But I would never let that stop me from coming back and enjoying the comfort and hospitality of the DeSoto again. This hotel made the city of Savannah Georgia feel like home. From one Savannah to another I want to thank everyone there. Whether you knew it or not, you made this trip so special. Thank you ❤️

We booked the DeSoto for two nights as part of a weeklong vacation to Florida and Georgia. We stayed in four hotels through the week and the DeSoto was by far our biggest disappointment. We had high hopes when we saw the pictures on the website and read their description. We assumed this would be a restored historic hotel with the quaint feel of the history but with updated finishes and amenities. However, upon arrival it was quickly obvious that the photos did not portray it as we expected. The photos of the common area are bright and fresh but when we walked in during the brightest part of the day the lighting was dim making it dark and somewhat depressing. This didn't change throughout the day or night as the interior lights were never raised and there are not enough windows to provide sufficient natural light. Unfortunately, our room was even worse. The hallway to our room was uncleaned with dirty carpets and right outside our door dirty plates from the previous occupants were still there. The engineered hardwood flooring in our room was broken in several places near the door to the balcony revealing the subfloor. The mirror in the bathroom was detached from the wall on one side making it slanted to the point the anchor was visible where it should have been bolted to the wall. The paint on the wall appeared discolored at places especially around the air vent due to a lack of cleaning. The bedding was mismatched so one had a thicker duvet with just sheets while the other had a thin duvet and an orange insulating blanket that made the white sheets appear pink. While taking a shower the plumbing would squeal followed by a complete loss of water pressure that was then restored to full power starting with cold water freezing occupant before the hot could catch up. The balcony was no more inviting as it was course concrete and just large enough for two people to stand but it did reveal the two decent qualities of the hotel which were the pool area and its location. It appears careful attention has been made to upgrade the rooftop pool and it presents a nice place to hang out. There was obviously no hallway or room cleaning service performed over the two days we were there. I know some hotels have gotten away from cleaning rooms automatically every day while guests are staying but our other hotels at least stated that and then offered the service free of charge, if desired. While the location is nice and does make it easy to get around the historic district, this does not in and of itself warrant the exorbitant cost of staying there. Savannah is a very walkable city making the accessibility to that district a non-issue when comparing hotels. I found this out pretty quickly after arriving when I avoided paying the ridiculous over $40/day valet fee that is required to park onsite by parking in a garage several blocks away for $10/day and walking back. All in all, the hotel served as a place to put our head down each night after visiting places in Savannah and it fit that purpose. However, the cost of staying there should warrant a much more high end experience. This felt more like a rundown hotel that is not being taken care of and relying on location to redeem the actual experience of being in the hotel.

It started when we called to verify when check-in time was and were informed by a male representative that it was 3 PM to check in. We arrived at the hotel and were greeted by the outstanding valet. Upon arriving at the check-in desk, we were informed that check-in was at 4 PM, and that our room was not ready yet. One of the front desk ladies stated that there was no male that worked at the desk and doubted that we even called to verify until we showed her our call log. We were told that we would be contacted when our room would be ready. After waiting 1 hour in the lobby, we walked to the front desk to check status and were told at 4:00 PM that our room was still not ready and that they were running behind on cleaning rooms. One of the other front desk ladies, Teeka, texted the house cleaning supervisor about our room as we were stressed about losing time exploring Savannah for my birthday weekend as we have driven afar from Tennessee and were only staying for one night. We returned to waiting once again. Upon waiting, we overheard other people state their room was not ready either and a lot of frustration was present. This was setting a siren off in my head. Twenty minutes after 4:00 PM, we were called to the front desk for our key cards, and we went up to the eighth floor to go to our room. Upon taking the elevator from a nice polished 4-star lobby, we were greeted with an unsettling hallway with dimmed lights that was very reminiscent of a Twilight Zone episode as almost if we travelled through time in the elevator. Upon entering our room, we were taken back by the outdated look and lack of cleanliness of the room. There were scuffs on the walls, dirty fingerprints all over the door, black mold coming out of the A/C vent and on the tile of the shower, rusty fixtures in the bathroom, clogged drain in the sink and a questionable smell emitting from the water, to top it off, the shower had very little water pressure and was very lukewarm upon taking a hot shower. The lobby is very misleading as you expect your room to look as such. The DeSoto is a hotel with a 4-star lobby and 1-star rooms. Kudos to the photographer for misleading us to book this room. The only positive part of our stay was Teeka who was a ray of sunshine who checked on us during our stay, and made the whole overall experience more bearable than it was along with the friendly valet service and great location though the overnight parking fee is a bit steep, it is an only option for parking close by in convenience. For anyone who has made it this far to reading this review, take heed and don’t say I didn’t warn you. Other cons: - no ice bucket - no vending machines - no fridge

So we arrived at the hotel on New Year’s Eve and checked in with Heather. We were given the room 602. When we get to the room we immediately noticed it’s not the room that we had paid for. What we had reserved was the executive king room which has two large windows. It must have been maybe 3-4 minutes after arriving in the room that I called the front desk to complain and spoke with Heather. I explained that this room was not the one that we booked and she informed us that the room that we had booked was sold out. I asked why nobody said anything to us when we checked in or gave us a call before we arrived, and her response was that since it was booked through a third party they couldn’t reach us. Then I asked if they would refund us the difference and she said no because when you book a room through a third party, they can’t guarantee that you’ll get the room that you paid for. She said, “if I had the room, I’d offer it to you”. Well of course, if we pay for a certain room, we should get that room. We went downstairs because we were not going to spend the night at a hotel room that we didn’t reserve on NYE, we spoke to the other lady at the front desk, Heather was there on the other desk. My husband let her know that we didn’t get the room that we had booked because they were sold out of it and nobody let us know. We said we were going to a different hotel. Her response was that she couldn’t do anything on her end and to contact the party that we booked it with so that they could refund it and that they would approve. We agreed to do that and my husband even said to her that they’d be contacting them so that they could approve the refund. You’d think that they would tell you right there and then that they wouldn’t do it. Once they called to ask, Heather said that they offered us a different room during check in so they couldn’t refund us. So, my question to you is, why would I have called you three minutes into the room if you had already “told” us that we were going to have a different room? We would have requested the refund for the difference anyways had you done it at the lobby or when I called. Since I’m writing this review on NYE, you can safely assume that it is because I really do believe that this hotel should have 0 stars for having dishonest employees.

The common areas of the hotel are great. The pool is very nice. The lobby is very impressive and the coffee shop is very convenient and has great food. It is the room itself that you stay in though and it seems the details and effort that were put into the common spaces were forgotten in the room as it leaves much to be desired. The fixtures seem outdated, there is only one outlet on the wall with the bed and in a day of cell phones needing to be charged you’d think there’d be more than one outlet on that side, there is no mini fridge in the room, the coffee maker did not come with creamer, the balcony door doesn’t shut all the way causing the lock to not latch, the AC unit is set and cannot be changed up or down, the lock on the side of the door frame does not work so TWICE someone from hotel staff entered our room when we couldn’t make it to the door in time after their knock, we had plumbing issues that caused the toilet and the shower to clog, there are outlets on the dresser which was nice considering the lack of wall outlets but they did not work, there’s clear signs of poor cleaning and water damage along the bathroom faucet, detailed cleaning is definitely missed and seems rushed, and the AC vent on the wall drips condensation. We didn’t know that valet parking was required so that tacked on an additional $38 per night plus a historic preservation fee of a few dollars each night was charged to our card that we didn’t know about. The location is great but overall this hotel is very much not worth a second trip to. We will be staying somewhere else our next trip to Savannah. If the amount of effort put into the common areas was put into the rooms this would be a nearly 5 Star Hotel.

DO NOT STAY HERE. Serious mold problem. I should have listened to the reviews on trip advisor that mentioned mold. I shrugged them off as a one off experience but they are 100% true. We got in late and pretty much went immediately to bed. Bed was comfortable. View was amazing. Woke in the middle of the night to an horrendous smell. I can’t even properly describe it. It was so bad I had to put my head under the covers. Finally fell back asleep 2 or so hours later. When getting ready the next AM we noticed our bathroom had black mold on the shower ceiling, shower door, and even the corners on the bathroom wall. We called and they relocated us to another room on the same floor. Same issue. Mold in the shower and on the vent in the bedroom. Went downstairs and the general manager hid from us. Not kidding. The front desk receptionist turned to him and said “this is the couple with the mold in their room”. He immediately turned around and went into the back without acknowledging us. The front desk receptionist had to go back and forth relaying information from us to him. We opted to leave and stay elsewhere and they provided us a full refund without hesitation. Wish I had gotten pics of the first room but here are pics from the second. If you zoom in on the vent you can see all of the black gunk on it.
