Have you ever seen someone surfing and thought "I wish I could do that!"? Then you need to go to Wave Hog. I started the year off saying those exact words. If you tell anyone in the middle of winter you want to learn how to surf, they most likely will think this is a new year's resolution you'll be giving up on. I emailed Wave Hog about my goal. Max recognized my ambition and responded with "Let's get you out in the ocean as soon as we can."
The shop has all the gear you could need to set you up for success. (Pro tip: best deal for awesome hats on the Island) I got all my gear from the shop. Max and I met on the first day where I wouldn't become completely frozen in the water, like Captain America, but the ocean had other ideas. The waves were firing, but they were extremely choppy. I was excited to potentially learn on some bigger waves. Maybe it was my chance to be like Patrick Swayze in Point Break, but without the bank robbing. Max, with his wisdom, suggested we go out later that day or even the next day. He "wanted (me) to go out there, learn, and have a good experience. That way (I) can lay the foundation for many good years of surfing ahead." At that moment, I knew I made the right decision of going to Wave Hog. Max's primary focus is helping people get out in the water, so they can enjoy themselves while surfing. That was very clear during this whole experience.
Max is a great teacher. He started off with teaching me surf etiquette. Then, he broke down the pop up in to simple steps. After going through it a couple of times on land, we went into the ocean. He insisted I start out only doing the first step of the pop up on our first couple of waves. Then, with each wave we kept building until I was fully standing to ride the wave. By the end of lesson, I felt way more confident on the board and rode some waves standing. I even went home and practiced the pop up steps in the mirror. That way, I'm ready to take the next step in my surfing journey when I'm out in the water again.
Whether it is for lessons, a new board, or any gear you may need - definitely check out...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I found this shop on the way home from vacation up north. We had a plan to get her a new board but weren’t sure we would find the right one on the way home to Savannah Ga. We found wave hog surf shop on the map and loved the name and the vibe. we decided we’d see if they had what she wanted. When we got there the guy running the shop was also the owner and after about a half hour of showing us his inventory and answering all of our questions she decided the Matador Brighton was exactly what she was looking for. She just surfed it about a hour before this post was made and she’s in love with it. She rated it 10/10 and is super happy with the quality, ride-ability, and look! These boards are hand made at the shop by the owner, and amazing quality! The customer service at the shop, the history of the shop and the love the owner has for his community, the sport, and his shop all made us super confident that we were making a good choice in buying this board. Now that she’s surfed it she’s even happier. She grew up surfing but has taking it really seriously the last 4 years, and she’s proud to be on the Matador. 10/10 review all the way from...
Read moreWavehog feels like home! I've been here so many times over the years to visit/shop as a local and have taken lessons with both Glenn and Max - both are amazing instructors. The lessons are always fun, easily digestible, and personalized. All instructors tailor the lessons/coaching to your individual needs - whether you’re a beginner, or a more experienced surfer looking to fine-tune a few things.
This summer, I bought my first board with Max, and the experience was amazing! Max knows his stuff and makes you feel completely at ease. His experience and expertise really show through in everything he does! He takes the time to help you find which board is exactly right for you. He helped me choose the perfect board based on my size, skill level, experience, and the type of waves I’d be riding once I moved back down south for the year.
I’d absolutely recommend Wavehog to anyone. If you're looking to get lessons or learn the basics, I can't recommend them enough - they'll teach you everything you need to know. Even if you're not a surfer, it’s a must-visit to just shop and look around! Can’t wait to come home and...
