The Museum and Grounds look great , and it would have been nice to enjoy it and learn some local history, but never have we felt more unwelcome in a public park. We stopped there this morning on the spur of the moment on the way to breakfast. parked the car. the gate was open and a few people were going in or walking around the grounds some in dressed for a re-enactment, some "civilians" like us. we walk in and go towards the memorial garden which is really nice and peaceful. we were reading about the park when this old woman comes up and asks us what we are doing there and she seemed really aggressive about it too? we tell her we came to visit and walk in the park. so then she tells us in a really annoyed way that the park is not open . I'm not sure how we were expected to know this being that the gate was open and there were people inside walking around like we were. we go to leave and rather than let us walk out she follows us at a slight distance to make sure we are gone she even follows us outside the gate and watches to make sure we are gone. this was really strange !!! and really RUDE. She practically chased us out of there. why not be NICE about it, being that you work at a place that operates on donations. She could have let us know what time they would be open but clearly this person was MEAN and probably scares off a lot of people.. I hope someone who runs the facility is reading this and finds this woman another position in the organization, anything that does not involve interaction...
Read moreMy grandparents used to be docents there and used to live there for awhile. I spent most of my early childhood there, I remember racing my grandma from the house to the gate trying to catch up to my mom's car as she would have to go to work and drop me off there. My handprint is there on one of the legs of the windmill. I was only 2 years old at the time when I got to do it back in '97. It's cool to be a part of history and have so many memories of that place, only to realize that it's a historical part of Simi Valley and California but at the time when I was a kid, I just thought it was my grandparents house. My grandparent's handprints, my mom and older brother's handprints are also on a leg of the windmill. Grandparents are Norman and Neva Helmuth. I visit this place every year on my grandma's birthday and the day she passed away in remembrance of her since she passed away 10 years ago. This place has changed so much since my grandparents had worked there and lived there but I can still remember how it used to look. Beautiful place. Amazing memories. I'll be visiting in a couple of hours today since today would be my...
Read moreThe historical park is a great place to learn about the history of Simi valley. They put on a lot of really great events. They staff and volunteers there are friendly, very knowledgable and really happy to teach you about the history of the place. I have attended some great events both as an observer and a volunteer and I highly recommend that you look into and take advantage of some of the really cool things they do. I believe that you can volunteer through the Simi valley parks and recreation. I dont thi k nearly enough Simi valley residents take advantage of what they can learn and the fun things they do. It is a great place to take your family. It is very child friendly with games for the kids. I remember going there as a elementary student but I found it fascinating going as an adult. I do wish the had a few more exibates but it really is a...
