Comic Fortress — Attraction in Somerville

My first visit to Comic Fortress was this past fall. The first thing I noticed was the breathing room in this store. Some comic book shops feel over-crowded and cluttered, this place does not at all. There were also no funky or musty smells, another positive. They have a nice collection of toys, t-shirts, figurines, etc. I wasn't shopping for anything but comics that day, so I didn't browse their collectibles much. They had a great selection of comics. Most impressive to me was their clearance area. They had awesome items (a Wonder Woman doll I really wanted, but alas, it was too close to Xmas to buy for myself!) and a huge selection of discounted trades and graphic novels. I picked up a hardcover of The Fountain for next to nothing along with my comics. I could have spent another hour browsing just their clearance, but I had my youngest with me and she was bored after 30 minutes of that.

Upon check-out, the owner gave us a little history of the shop and recommended I sign up for their mailing list (I did, they have some great events!). I always have to note when I feel comfortable, as a woman, in a comic book shop and this was definitely one of those occasions. I will return again soon! My only complaint is I wish we...

Another 5-Star New Jersey comic shop of note. Located in lovely Somerville, NJ right on Main Street, Comic Fortress is a must-stop shop if you are in the area or if you are a comic hunter visiting from abroad.

The shop is spacious, open and clean, with a vast selection of comics, trades, statues, figures, pop-culture, and apparel - you name it. It is rare to find a shop as spacious as this. Product is nicely organized, with kids comics up front, and walls of comics and trades further back. Staff is friendly and ready to help you find what you want. Some amazing statues on display here as well.

In the back is a wall of half-price trade paperbacks and hardcovers that is worth perusing for the bargain hunter. There were several bins of half-price vintage comics as well on sale when I last visited.

The location is exquisite - right in the heart of Somerville, with tons of coffee shops, bakeries, etc. Find parking, go to Comic Fortress and then get a bubble tea when you are done - or go shopping at all the great little shops nearby in this amazing old school NJ town! Highly...

Comic Fortress is a quality place, and one of the better Comic Stores in NJ. The selection is fairly wide and there is a good mix of issues and paperbacks. The staff and owner are all really friendly. I always go with my girlfriend and while I feel pretty much welcome everywhere, my girlfriend feels like unwelcome at many establishments, almost a snobbishness about people who aren't 'hardcore' enough. This isn't the case with Comic Fortress, everyone is very welcoming and helpful, regardless of whether you are hardcore or it's a new interest. True story: while visiting there one day my credit card fell from my pocket, I didn't notice and left. I got a call on my cell phone half an hour later, it was an employee of comic fortress calling to tell me he found my card. Turns out he took my name from the card and tracked me down online until he found my phone number. Most places would keep the card for you, but I can't think of any others that would go to that kind of trouble to return your card. Excellent...
