Fernanda's Beauty Salon — Attraction in Somerville

I booked an appointment with Yasmin for the keratin treatment at Fernanda’s upon the high recommendation of my hair dresser. She has keratin treatments done at Fernanda’s twice a year, as does her twin sister. I have previously had “straightening treatments” done 2 times in the past, but this was very different in the best way possible. My hair is so healthy and shiny looking right after my treatment.

Regarding past experiences with straightening treatments (which I don’t believe were “keratin” treatments but I’m not sure); I feel like my hair looked dull after the straightening treatments I’ve had in the past and also way too thin or stripped. I remember feeling like I could not wait until the treatment was a little more washed out so my hair would feel thick again. This is not how I feel with this treatment from FBS. My hair looks much shinier and healthier than it did when I walked into the salon.

The goal in all 3 past “straightening treatments” (including this one I had today at Fernanda’s) was to shorten the time it takes to straighten my hair. After my first 2 experiences (not at Fernanda’s) I felt that my expectations had not been fully met. Yes, my hair was straight but it also lacked something I did not realize I would miss - such as “healthy shine” and/or “volume/mass.” My experience at FBS was different and so much better! The keratin treatment at Fernanda’s is my first straightening treatment that has exceeded my expectations and has convinced me to do this again in the near future/whenever it feels like it’s time to do this again.

This was my 2nd experience in Fernanda’s Beauty Salon. I had I believe just a trim in this salon possibly 5 or 6 years ago when they had newly opened. My usual hair dresser had very low availability at the time and I was looking for something closer to home. All went well in that visit and I was impressed with the attractive looking space. I did not return to FBS for trims because a friend recommended a different hair dresser who was great with curly hair, which I had begun trying to embrace.. (lol). I am telling this story because I do want to say that today I was blown away by the space and the level of expertise at Fernanda’s Beauty Salon. If you visited here 5 years ago and you visit today, I believe the experience will be even better than your last. You are treated like a queen as soon as you walk in. They have the best of the best of everything you can imagine in a salon. The most impressive was the chair you are seated in when they wash your hair… it’s a LAY FLAT MASSAGE CHAIR. If you would like it to massage you, it will knead your body from your upper back/scapular area down to your calves! There are 4 or 5 of these, I believe. I was also impressed with the giant selfie light that I imagine is used on tv sets. Last but not least, I was impressed by all the offerings of food and beverage - I was offered coffee when I came in, a chocolate and condensed milk(/almost caramel /Brazilian style) chocolate covered strawberry which was absolutely delicious and too big for my mouth so it took me like 10 min to eat 🤣. When I finished my coffee I was offered water (sparkling or spring, both in a bottle). I took a bottle of spring water. During my treatment (which took nearly 3 hours, keratins do take this long) I was offered snacks and drinks from trays at least 2 or 3 more times. I want to stress this because this was impeccable hospitality.

Years ago I visited Fernanda’s Beauty Salon and loved the services that I received. I got a keratin and color back then. I moved out of state, and recently moved back. I was both, thrilled and thankful that Fernanda was accepting new clients. I had my first appointment today since my return to Boston, and I absolutely loved what my hair looked like when I left! I have worn my hair straight for many years, but today she asked if I would like to try beachy waves, and I loved them. I already had a keratin and color, so what I got today was a wash-and-cut, blow-dry, and flat-iron. Sophia, one of the stylists, washed, blow-dried, and flat-ironed my hair. It was very relaxing lying back in a massage chair as you get your hair washed. Sophia offered a hot towel, a chocolate strawberry, and coffee, tea or water. An assistant came by again to offer the same as I was getting my hair blow-dried. Then Fernanda, the owner who I made my initial appointment with, finished my style with the cut, applying the flat iron after the cut, and the waves which was a new style for me. My hair is beautiful, shiny and bouncy, and I’ve received quite a bit of compliments. I love the positive and relaxing environment of Fernanda’s Beauty Salon. The salon is delightful, very clean, and gorgeous! Fernanda and her staff of stylists are so attentive. Fernanda listened to me, gave me exactly what I requested, and paid for, and did not disappoint. I AM ABSOLUTELY coming back, and looking forward to it. Fernanda explained so much to me in regards to my hair. She is a wonderful stylist as well as a wonderful person. Thank you for a fantastic experience at your salon today, Fernanda! I am so very happy with my hair! A few months later at my next appointment Fernanda and Yasmin put a keratin in my hair which made it silky smooth and shiny. I loved it and received so many compliments. Fernanda and all of the stylists at Fernanda’s Beauty Salon are truly professional, and dedicated to excellence. About a week ago, Fernanda refreshed my roots color and highlights, and Luiza stepped in to complete the blow dry, style, and beach waves. Luiza also gave a very relaxing shampoo and conditioner as the massage chair elevated my experience. I love Fernanda’s Beauty Salon, and am always very satisfied with the level of service that I receive. Every stylist at this salon is extremely talented. This review has a story, and I believe it is important to read it especially when you're thinking about receiving hair art at Fernanda's Beauty Salon. I promise this story ends happy, and I love my hair.

One of the hairstylists, Luiza took the time to listen to what I want while showing her the Pinterest picture. She offered her expertise about the color and tone. Then, she informed me of the cost. I spoke up on how I want to lower the price a little by taking out combo treatment but I kept some of treatments since my hair would be way more bleached than my hair art from 2022. We worked it out on the price even though it's a bit higher than I expected, but she explained to me the benefits. It's worth it!!!

Fernanda is a supervisor throughout the process and helped some part. Fernanda was absolutely look forward to working with pastel pink or rose gold color while blending well to grow my natural black hair roots because I trust them to make my hair reach to that tone. I wanted it brighter than hair art I had from Fernanda in 2022.

After 8 hours long to get to that tone from my black hair that does not have any trace of bleach to the color that they copied from my pinterest picture, which means my hair needed to be blond before adding any coloring.

While Luiza was curling my hair after completing the hair art and hair cut, my gut screamed how it looked similar to Lava Girl character. My hair looked amazing in various shade of pink and soft purple and soft yellow, however, overall that color didn't fit what I imagined when going to work and going out in my daily outfits. I spoke up because I remembered from the contract that I signed to let them know if I do not like it or want any adjustment.

Anyway, Fernanda and Luiza listened. Fernanda was like I love that color, and she grieved a little but she understood. I was like I'm so sorry but this doesn't fit, so then we looked for more pictures to find the match to what I think it should be like adding brown filter over it. Then Luiza found it and showed it to me. I was like that's the one. Then we proceeded.

In the result, I am so happy. I had fun showing off as they took pictures of it. It was absolutely perfect. My mom and my boyfriend approved it when I sent them pictures. My boyfriend's jaw dropped when he saw my hair. I will upload pictures later in natural light. That profile picture of me with purple hair and green headband is from 2022.
