We only stood here because we thought it was connected to the old village area where we had a phantom event. We booked without incident. Easy peasy. However, we didn't get a receipt, and it took a few calls to get nowhere. Emailing wad easier. Seems they're very short staffed and only have 1 person manning the lines. This isn't her fault at all. But it made me so nervous because I booked this place after seeing an ad on Facebook, and I worried I got scammed. Arrival was just as bad. We and a group of seniors showed up around the same time to locked main office doors. No one there. Yes we were there early but I just didn't expect there to be zero service at all. The older women were more upset than I was. It was what it was. We had to call security thankfully the number was on the door otherwise I don't know how long we'd have been there for .they helped us. It felt disorganized in the beginning but we were able to enter the village while staff arrived to accommodate us. It was a small interruption but an interruption nonetheless. The rooms were ok..but a toothpick wad left on the bathroom floor from a past guest that grossed me out. Place seemed empty. The reservation system needs help. I've never been anywhere where staff wasn't available 247, but I didn't mind that much. I hope they do manage to get it together because the pool looked like it hadn't been opened all summer and it made me weary about how long they'd be in business if they didn't work out some kinks because the place is quaint. The village, however, is a much farther walk than I imagined. You will need a car to get to it. There are no hotels close enough as to where a car wouldn't be needed. You could walk maybe... but not with small kids because the sidewalks end and they race down the roadway. Scary Wasn't quite what was advertised. But we had a...
Read moreI've never felt the need to post a negative review about anywhere I've stayed, but having stayed in at least a hundred hotels, this was the worst experience I’ve had. The front desk staff were shockingly rude and condescending, and it was a shabby, depressing, uncomfortable place to stay. What a combo!
I encouraged our family to stop in Sturbridge on our annual family road trip up to Maine and saw that this hotel had high ratings and suggested it. I am now now no longer allowed to suggest hotels. The staff were just... the meanest, most condescending people I’ve ever encountered at a front desk anywhere. They repeatedly humiliated my elderly father during check-in because it amused them. They then humiliated him again when he had the audacity to come and ask them a question about Sturbridge village later, telling him to refrain from addressing them while they were checking emails.
The rooms were super musty, dated, and warm. It was so grim. There wasn’t enough hot water to fill a bath, and the bathtub was so painful to sit down in that when I immediately stood back up, I discovered I was bleeding in multiple places from whatever they stuck on the bottom of that tub. So many ugly scars from that bathtub. The WiFi was good and the TV worked, though. The bed was also fine. The furniture was v dated and chipped, but still functional. The pool area was a tiny, depressing little fenced-off square in the back.
The breakfast was also possibly the worst I'd ever had at a hotel. Vacuum-packaged individual bagels, two kinds of cereal, something pretending to be yogurt. Completely...
Read moreMy first impression as I pulled into the parking lot was confusion and disappointment that the picture on Old Sturbridge Inn's website does not accurately reflect where we were staying.
To be clear: Though the web site (and even their Google profile pic) portrays a quaint 1800's Inn, you will actually be staying in a standard motel a short ways away.
The check-in process was easy and the staff friendly. Our room itself was bright, cheerful and clean while the bed was superbly comfortable.
There was little attention to detail or resources to meet basic overnight needs. For example, we wanted water. I called the front desk and asked for some and was told that there was a vending machine outside. I went to the vending machine to find out that it only takes cash. I went to the office to be told that there is an ATM a short walk down the street. I then found out that the vending machine only takes $1 bills so the $20 bill from the ATM was not too helpful.
I paid for champagne (opted for the sparkling cider) and chocolates to surprise my wife. It was left for us at the time I asked but there was no bottle opener to open the bottle…
All in all, it was a standard, no-frills motel experience. The location was very convenient being right next to Old Sturbridge Village.
I would stay there again if I'm looking for an economic stay, just need to adjust my...
